I read that smoking/dementia article. Even accounting for issues with the study, fifty percent is a rather significant and scary correlation. Interesting to see if the next few generations have the same kind of rates of dementia.

"Might be possible", meaning "the generals told me we don't have any choice in the matter".

Here's a morning news item: conservative think-tanks and newsmedia have "instructions" to start preparing for war with Iran after Labor Day.

Why don't doctors who perform abortions do house calls? Do they? In the era of RU-486, this should be a feasible (and lower-profile) option, shouldn't it? Just curious.

There will be a military coup in the United States before there will be a new war with Iran. We simply don't have the army for it. We're stretched thinner than we ever have been before. We couldn't even defend the home country now if we had to, let alone go off and attack a country three times the size of Iraq, in mostly mountainous terrain, with a large functioning industrial economy.

If we attacked Iran, we would LOSE. The US military doesn't fight battles it can't win.

The generals know this, and I'm quite certain they've explained it to the president in no uncertain terms.

Unions - down in the US, not so elsewhere.

Just sayin.

Of course, those other nations run continual budget surplus and don't get involved in wars of foreign adventure for lies, and live a lot longer than we do.

oh, and that dementia thing might also have a correlation with repeated exposure to explosions and other TBI ...

No doubt, Fnarf, but this is one BAAAAAT-SHHIIIIIITT KURAZEE PREZNIT! With an evil, greedy, VP who's more likely running the show.

The idea that large segments of the U.S. military would willfully commit an act of Treason against their Commander-In-Chief, no matter how BAAAAAT-SHHIIIIIITT KURAZEE he may be, is, while certainly not completely beyond the realm of possibility, still seems a bit of a stretch to me. Unlike military structures in some other countries, I firmly believe the people at the highest level of the U.S. Military understand the Constitutional limitations of their authority, and would not, except perhaps in the event of a direct threat to the domestic National Security, attempt to exceed that authority.

At least, I sure HOPE that's what they think.

Congress, on the other hand, should understand by now that the American Votership overwhelmingly will not support another Iraqi-style incursion, just as they no longer support the current fiasco, and any attempts by the Executive Branch to do so should be met with adamant and overwhelming defiance.

At this point, I imagine even most GOP members of Congress, seeing which way the wind is blowing, and knowing they will have to justify their actions to an increasingly skeptical constituency in an election year, would be hard-pressed to stand behind shrub should he actually try to run an Iran invasion up the proverbial flag pole.

Oh, and Erica, that 12.5% union membership rate is down to 12% as of 2006.

The good news is that WA ranks 5th overall in the percentage of the workforce represented by Union collective bargaining agreements.

FNARF, True the military is unlikely to agree to a full-scale ground invasion cum occupation (ala Iraq), and I don't think the White House would order something like that. But there are other types of "wars" - bombing targets in Iran, small forces sent in, etc. I'm no military historian, but it seems at least possible (given Bush's imbecility) to imagine a more small-scale action, probably assuming (probably wrongly) that the government will topple quickly and be replaced by freedom loving pro-US folks.

What's the big deal about the unisex bathrooms at Emerson? There have been some unisex bathrooms at the UW since like 1999.

Re: Bombing Iran

Didn't Bush replace all of the generals who might refuse to attack Iran with yet another group of shit-for-brains Yes Men?

Bush must be confused: Does he want to start three wars or World War III?

And they will be telling us exactly the same lies they told us about Iraq: WMD, it'll be a cake walk, 9/11, etc. The reports indicate it'll be airstrikes only and not a ground invasion.

The irony is that both right-wing governments in the US and Iran need a war to bolster their waning political popularity. Moderates on both sides will be over-ruled. Honestly, it's hard to decide which group of psychotic religious fanatics to root for.

One thing is for sure, Iran, with a 4 million member army and 25 years of preparation for a US attack, will not go down without a nasty fight. Most of the world will condemn a US attack, making us even more of a despised international pariah than we are currently.
