I know I'm being pedantic, but this was Labor Day weekend.

Phew. Now that that's done with, why the fuck aren't there more cops out responding to this kind of shit, particularly after last call? Everyone fucking knows that last call is when the trouble happens.

God dammit this pisses me off so much. This kind of shit isn't supposed to be happening on Pike \ Pine or Capitol Hill. I have noticed the change in attitude for about two years now, and I have no idea what we can do about this. But the neighborhood needs to find a way to make the assholes that did this very uncomfortable with the idea of even coming onto the hill.

Fuckers. As I've asked in the past, whatever happened to the Pink Patrol? Granted, I'm not gay, but this is my neighborhood too, and I'd gladly be involved with community policing if any organizations involved with that exist around here.

Police use "bait cars" to nab auto theives. It's a helluva deterrent.

Maybe they (or the community) should start planting armed "bait fags" around the hill at bar closing time.

"...but some anecdotal evidence suggests that as the neighborhood changes—more straight clubs, more condos, more people who commute to the Hill at night to party—the climate for gays is changing."

Yeah, it's the condos that cause gay bashing. Urban infill is mixin' folks up. The gays should live in ghettoes, and the straights should live in suburban condos. Segregation is the answer. Yessirree.

First, I hope Geske is recovering from this and is doing alright.

That said, while ideally this should never happen in any gay person's life time, having this happen once in nearly a decade is about the same amount of time as a random person getting mugged or pickpocketted -- which is to say, this doesn't necessarily mean that gay tolerance is drastically decaying in Capitol Hill, if at all. Since I lived here, I've heard of at least one gay bashing incident in Capitol Hill a year.

It would be easy to blame, say, Club Lagoon's clientele or any loudly heterosexual scapegoat nearby. But this could have happened anywhere. Homo-bigotry is never going to die, unfortunately. It can definitely become minimized and curtailed, but unfortunately it will never go away -- and we'll unfortunately always have incidents like this.

There are still white people who bash others for not being white.

And the amount of abuse of women committed by men is still abominable.

Sucks. :(

So when you reach the point that The Stranger is saying condos cause gay bashing, can we conclude that it has gone from being an alt weekly to a cult? Or is that idea just this side of sane? Maybe when The Stranger proclaims that condos give you syphilis, can we then say they have jumped the shark?

At any rate, lets never again hear any bullshit about how it's only ugly condos that you object to. Or only overpriced condos that are the problem. Or only condos that displace Erica Barnett's favorite bar. It's none of that.

You just hate condos. Fucking snobs.

"...call me naive, but I didn’t think this could happen here."

I entirely agree with that statement.

"My arm ended up inside of their window, which was down… The passenger grabbed onto my arm, and they just peeled out driving real fast. I just remember staring at my roommate on the sidewalk, trying to figure out what was going on. It happened in like five seconds, all of this."

My God [sic]...can you honestly, honestly, imagine the shock? It literally blows my mind that this can happen on fuckin' Broadway. Seriously, gays, put yourself in this guys shoes.

I can't even joke about this. Even me, Poe, Mr. Poe, me, yeah, moi, cannot joke about this. It is absolutely terrifying when you place yourself in Andrew's situation. You never think this sort of event can occur, on (at least, I mean, come on) Capital Hill. Them bam. It does.

What does Russell Johnson, or whatever the fuck his name is, have to say about this, Eli? It would be interesting to here his bullshit. Though, I wouldn't be surprised to hear some heartless justice brouhaha, regardless of how extreme it's place in this matter might be.

I don't think that the number of gay bashings are going up just in Seattle. I'm from Phoenix and we've had a jump in them here. The police are starting to catch some heat for not taking it very seriously. Local residents, on the other hand, are taking it seriously....

You know, you all (most recently @16) are right about the condo reference. I've deleted it. Doesn't make any sense.

For the record, here's the offending original:

Police spokesman Mark Jamieson says he isn’t aware of any data showing an increase in gay bashings on Capitol Hill lately, but some anecdotal evidence suggests that as the neighborhood changes—more straight clubs, more condos, more people who commute to the Hill at night to party—the climate for gays is changing. Geske, too, had heard the grumblings about the changing neighborhood well before he was attacked.

Terrible! Did anyone else on broadway happen to step in or be concerned about this? Dick's is full of people at odd hours... Gosh, it'd be great to think that at least some of the non-superfluous suburban fodder that comes up here to party (that might not be bigoted, may have some compassion, might have some sober sense even) would have stepped in to help him out by, oh, I don't know - trying to stop a moving vehicle with a person pinned to the side. But, let me guess - they didn't want to get involved, thus supporting this kind of progrom...

“I guess I do feel like it’s less of a home for gay people,” he told me.

I've mentioned this here before, but I grew up on Capitol Hill and, even though I'm straight, I've been (attempted) bashed a couple of times just because I'm a guy who lives on Capitol Hill. Three points relating to that:

1) Bigots come here from other places looking to bash queers. It's not a question of the atmosphere on Capitol Hill; it's a question of the atmosphere in Yelm. The last time a carload of people called me faggot and stopped to confront me it was pickup truck full of young guys who definitely weren't from around here and were looking to prove something. They were driving around Volunteer Park on Federal, so they were clearly looking for people going in and out of the park on an isolated street. They got back in their truck and ran away when my friend and I responded to their taunts by charging them.

2) This kind of thing has been happening for as long as Capitol Hill has been a gay neighborhood. It's a hell of a lot better now than it was in the '80s.

3) Dan's assertions that everything has been great for gays since Stonewall notwithstanding, the second time someone pulled something like this on me it wasn't a truckful of rednecks -- it was a couple of cops. They drove up on the sidewalk in front of me and my friend, shone their spotlight in our faces to blind us, and used their loudspeaker to call us names and told us to go back into the closet. They drove away afterwards, but it could have been much, much worse. So the fact that today's cops investigate bashings as a bias crime is a definite improvement.

Don't believe the hype. What happened to this guy is deeply fucked up, but Capitol Hill is as safe or safer for gays than it's ever been. People who live here just need to be aware and stick together.

(And I don't even look remotely butch, I just asserted my right to not be picked up, literally, by some guy I didn't know.)

Capitol Hill used to feel safe, but it doesn't anymore.

@25: Given that this all went down at 2:30am, there probably wasn't anyone at Dick's.

This is just another anecdote about the changing climate on the hill, but I was at Julia's a few weeks back for a show and a group of obviously straight guys walked in and sat near us at the bar. They were clearly uncomfortable once they realized where they were. Finally, one of them tapped me on the shoulder and asked "what kind of bar is this?" I told him and he and his friends became increasingly more offensive after that. They eventually left of their own accord (though the girls they were with wanted to stay and watch the show). I wanted to tell them that if they weren't OK with gay culture, they should really head to Pioneer Square or Belltown, but these guys were about 3 times my size and I didn't feel like getting stabbed that night.

Posted by T | September 6, 2007 9:54 AM

This is indeed truly horrible. I'm not sure if packing heat is the best idea as generally it's not legally acceptable to shoot unarmed attackers. However in this case it would have been as they were using there CAR as a deadly weapon (I'm picturing doing just that in my mind as they drag me down the street. I would have no remorse at all about shooting those bastards in the head). I believe pepper spray is legal without a permit here. So says the uniform store down by the 24 hour finess off of Denny. Pick some up there boys. You'll catch the gay bashers by surprise as they'll think it's hair spray...

The SGN has been reporting an increase in gay-bashings around the city in the past few months, notably Belltown and the Hill. Also notable is that in a few of the cases the SPD has apparently been reticent to investigate them as bias crimes. I don't read slog every day, but seem strange I haven't come across any of those stories here. Or are they on slog somewhere? Seems worthy of some investigation.

Perhaps the broadway business association could actually get off their collective ASSES and listen to what people have been saying. Start marketing Broadway as a gay area, that way places like club lagoon won't be tempted to set up shop because its harder to get straight jerks to come to a club in the heart of a gay district, and much easier to get the nice straight people that capitol hill has had living in its streets forever. the BBA won't even put up rainbow flags in their windows or on the street poles year round. Pike and Pine should do the same thing. The straight people that live on capitol hill have no problem with being in a gay district, but if anything it will get rid of a lot of the bad element. Look at boys town or the castro. How many straight people do you think go into a bar there and have to ask what kind of bar it is? A friend lives near Club Lagoon and can tell you what it's like up there after 2...i don't feel safe being near that block anymore at that hour.

@40 and 42: It's tempting to get a gun permit, it seems WA state it's pretty easy to get a license to carry a concealed weapon. I'm just worried about having one in my pocket on the dance floor at the cuff. All those roaming hands looking for something hard to squeeze. But seriously it's one thing to shoot a crazy street person (not that's okay either, but no surprise no charges were filed), another thing to shoot some maladjusted 20 y/o Microsoft darling who's unarmed and wants to pick a fight (again unless he's dragging you along by his CAR). I'm just thinking non lethal defensive measures might be more reasonable. Pepper spray and/or a baseball bat to the shins from the Q Patrol (sign me up!) seems more reasonable.

Posted by jhell | September 6, 2007 11:26 AM

@44 - actually, it's illegal to bring concealed weapons (even licensed ones) into bars anyway. So in that particular case, other weapons (pepper spray, the glass bottle your last beer came in) might indeed be the better option.

I just want to say how this saddens me to no end. I love living on Capitol Hill for the very reason I get to see people be themselves, hold hands with the person they love - no matter what. It warms my heart to see such a large cross section of people in one place.

The very fact that people would ruin this small haven of security makes me sick and sad. I am aching for my gay neighbors, as I want nothing but for them to feel safe in my neighborhood. I even yelled at these shitty mormons who were around, tellling them that intolerant bigots don't need to be on Capitol Hill, and that their message was not acceptable and hurtful. I screamed at them until they left, telling them that I would not accept what they would say about the people that live around me, and that no one should have to hear it. We all need to stand strong against this invasion. Capitol Hill can be safe again, we just all need to focus and make it happen.

No more passive agressive Seattlites. We need to actively shout at bigots and get them the fuck out of here.

Seattle was so progressive vis-a-vis GLBT acceptance that we thought Capitol Hill was sanctuary even in the early 90s. Still, one night a friend of mine was walking home after midnight from his nursing job at an area hospital when a carload of young men cruising around some of the residential streets saw that there was perhaps too much swish in his carriage, pulled over, and proceeded to beat the shit out of him. Plastic surgeons had to rebuild his face.

So, no, it isn't always safe. There'll probably always be some mean, disturbed, sexually confused, little suburban creeps setting out to make themselves feel better by finding someone they think is lower on the food chain and proving their manhood by gay-bashing.

It seems to be more of a problem, though, when no one else is around, and that stretch of Broadway mentioned (SCCC to Denny) is fairly deserted and pretty creepy late at night. Now that I'm older (and more of a target), I won't walk it anymore after dark.

It can happen downtown, too. That's where I escaped my near miss a few years back - young guys in a windowless van wanting me to go with them.

The thing is, when this happens, you can't believe it's happening when it's going on, and afterwards, it fucks you up for days.

I'm assuming Andrew made a report to the police. If he hasn't, he needs to because believe it or not, they have a pretty fine victims' assistance department which helps people work through their feelings and what they can expect to feel.

Hanging in there, Andrew.

@50 Signs and loud voices do not even compare to violent bigots who hunt people down and inflict physical harm on them. I mean, okay, so maybe the religious zealots are annoying -- but unless you're in a state where the beer's 3% and abortion under every circumstance is illegal, they're not causing physical harm.

Seattle is a freak fest compared to Houston, you guys are luck. When I walk down B'way I feel like I'm at a Burning Man reunion, it's cool. Seattle has plenty of weird freaks left on Capital Hill. People always whine about how the past was better but I like Seattle today.

@myself in 52: Actually most of the physical harm done by religious zealots is not of the sign-holding, yelling variety. It's quieter and more subtle and much much more devastating. Just like the assault on Andrew in this post: the worst stuff takes place under cover of darkness, and seemingly protected by the majority's willingness to shut up and look away.

It seems like a big part of the problem here in the SPD and their lack of action. If the police aren't willing to do anything about it then more of these types of crimes will occur. It just looks more and more like it's up to "us" and our willingness to fight back in defense of ourselves as well as our neighborhoods. This also high lights the need for pressure to be put on the SPD to investigate these attacks as hate crimes. As it stands now all of these whatever you would want to call them know that they can get away scott free with attacking people without consequence.

I agree with #51, well put. It does fuck you up afterwards. I came across this by accident and have to comment. Why is anyone surprised this happened in Seattle? It happens in Boston, N.Y. and Montreal too. Assaults, especially in a big city like Seattle, are notoriously officially underestimated because most people don't bother reporting them to the cops. Anyone who's grown up in a big city like me know this to be particually true. Things like homicides, violent assaults, car thefts (insurance requires you file an official report) and commercial and residential robberies are really the only resonably accurate crime statistics available. Alot more goes like this guy getting jumped and dragged by the car than is reported although because of the internet information spreads much faster now than say it did in the 80's. Common sence tells you to be always on guard, especially at night, in deserted areas, and (this is hard) when you're fucked up. The world is full of freaks and I'm not just talking about the cool kind.

In the mid to late 80's and early 90's gay men were being targeted and not only bashed on the hill, they were being robbed, raped & murdered. A guy was found in Volunteer Park one morning in his burnt out charred car, another under the street in the U. District after a night out on the hill, mummified from the heat of the pipes where his body had been dumped. Not to mention the assaults at knife point by gangs of men who would cut open the back of the victims clothing after beating him, then violating him sexually while he was held down and bleeding, crying for mercy, traumatizing him for life. And what about the guy at the Timberline parking lot not that long ago who was bottled at the New Year before they closed when there were tons of people about. It's not a surprise to me that it's happening, it has never ever stopped. I was attacked by three men on the way home one night from Neighbour's and ducked into a doorway totally freaked out while they circled just out of range of me, when the opening came I ran out and belted one full on the nose and smashed it, then ran like hell and suddenly was hit so hard from the back that I was floored literally. Luckily people saw what was going on and used cell phones and themselves to help me or who knows what might have happened. To this day I hardly ever go out at night alone. Don't ever for one millisecond think or believe that it can't, won't or doesn't happen here because that my friends could threaten your very existence. The Q Patrol did a great job and then suddenly died out, we need something like that back in action and we all need to protect one another when we're out and about. Of course trolling the alleys for a hot one at 4a.m. doesn't help anything (the maniacs are looking for you then), but it's still undeserving of being bashed. I wish Andrew a speedy recovery and a return to safety much wiser from the experience.

FYI You can find pepper spray at Pawn Shops, the best kind to get is a combo of Mace, Pepper Spray and dye (so that the cops can identify your attacker later if s/he gets away). Also check out Home Alive at www.homealive.org, which is a community organization that offers Self Defense classes on a sliding scale of pay what you can (and if you can afford it, pay really well because they do a lot to help keep our community safe!)
