...and I don't like James Dobson. Or Fred Thompson.

Fred Thompson vs. Hillary Clinton. Which way do you think James Dobson leans in THAT race?

Maybe if they have no one to support they just will stay home on election day.

Seriously, shouldn't they just be praying that it all works out for the best?

@3

The only important thing this country should be concerned with, to them, is "true" family values. By true, they mean their family values. By that, they mean a man and a woman, a bunch of babies, Christianity, and preachin' the Word.

War isn't a big deal and there is nothing to worry about the environment because when it ends it ends and it is His plan. The end of times! Yay God!

Yeah, I know, Poe. I'm related to "them". I am painfully aware of how they think.

Well, that does it. Unless Thompson can get a vote of confidence from Pat Robertson, he's pretty much fucked with the fundies. Here's hoping they all stay home and pout next year in November.

You know that Thompson is now in the lead for the Republican nomination and likely to be our next Preznit, right?

He just has those stupid, hateful, lazy, ignorant qualities that Americans value in a leader.

@9 If Thompson gets the nomination, his Dem opponent will win that much more easily. Especially given these harsh words from Dobson. You'd be disheartened to find how many midlanders hang on Dobson's every word.

Holy shit, I actually agree with James Dobson. Well, not so much via the particulars, but more the general sentiment he expresses. Either way, they're both assholes.

Both are trash.

my gut feeling is that thompson will fizzle out before the first primaries. he doesn't telegraph a burning desire for the job, and has no real logic for running, and hasn't set the Rs fundraising world on fire. guiliani is mean SOB and has the (twisted, wrong) logic for running. with the playing field more stacked against the Rs going into 2008, i think he'll be their nominee. kind of like the Rs version of Kerry (ie - horribly flawed as a candidate, but perceived as "most electable" in the general election). of course if he does get the nomination, he'll need a christianist, true believer in the veep spot to keep that part of the base satisfied. so my prediction is either a guiliani/huckabee ticket or a guiliani/brownback ticket ... something along those lines.

chris @ 13,

Good call. You're probably right.

Christianist is a great word to describe it.

Romney is leading in the early state-by-state polls, and he's also seen as more conservative than Giuliani (though not as conservative as Thompson. See (http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/republican_ideology)).

I also think that Thompson's star will fade, and unless he can come out ahead in the state polls, his national popularity means nothing. I figure that Thompson will finish third or fourth in the early primaries and drop out, with his support going to Romney. The Christian conservatives currently backing minor candidates will eventually split between Romney and Giuliani depending upon individual tolerance for Mormonism vs. homo-loving New Yorkers. Those two will contend for the nomination. Giuliani's only chance is to remain competitive until the California and New York primaries, which he would probably win. Of the minor GOP candidates, I figure Huckabee, Tancredo, and Paul will hold out the longest, as each represents an extreme of a particular faction in the party. To placate supporters of these candidates, the eventual nominee will have to pander even more than usual to Christian extremists, anti-immigrant racists, and anti-government militia "Patriot" types. Their convention will come off like a fascist rally, delighting the 33% of the country that really goes for that shit and scaring the wits out of a majority of the rest of us.

Clinton will be the Democratic nominee, and will turn out to be more popular than expected, particularly when compared to the raving nut on the other side. Figure the first Democratic landslide in memory, with at least a 10% margin of victory and possible as much as 15-20%.

Then she'll squander it all with a timid and corporate-friendly presidency that continues the Iraq war and otherwise returns to the status quo of the former Clinton presidency. But from November 2008 to January 2009, we'll have a few months of hope.

@16, the Clinton elections of '92 and '96 were pretty big landslides from an electoral vote perspective (370, 379 respectively), although the popular vote was a more even split.

i have a feeling you're right about the '08 republican convention. when the Rs backs are against the ropes, all the virulant strains that are kept undercover come out to play (ie - the pat buchanan speech at the '92 convention - scary!!).

unfortunately i also think you're all to right about hillary clinton as well. i just don't get why rank and file Ds are so enamored with her. she's a corporatist hack, and her husband's presidency was mediocre at best, and directly enabled 8 years of a horrifying presidency. i know it's unfashionable to say so, but bill clinton's blow job had a direct impact on al gore losing the '00 election. i hope primary and caucus going Ds come to their senses sometime around january '08 and vote for obama, edwards or richardson ... hell, even kucinich.
