This can't be the face of gentrification, can it? Well maybe it is, but we're all looking six inches too low.

They know that on Capitol Hill this place is gonna go under in like three seconds if they don't have shirtless himbos serving alongside the gals, right?

WHAT??? where in b'way is this? They're really trying to "straight"en capitol hill up, arent they?

Going to get the mobile home cleaned up.

Isn't this right by where Vivace's moving, too? WTF. Damn RIGHT I want to see shirtless guys alongside those boobalicious women! And it had all better be very very IRONIC. Because this is Capitol Hill for God's sake.

Wow, I'm stunned.

Gee, soon Broadway be almost as cool and distinctive as Southcenter Parkway. When's the Bed, Bath and Beyond moving in? Jo-Ann? Oak Barn?

Shit, y'all are going to miss the junkies.

I wonder how many times it will be spray painted, have its front door pissed and shat on, or be stormed by a bunch of gay pranksters dressed in bondage gear and banana hammocks before they give up and leave.

So much for decreasing the number of gay bashings on Capital Hill. Now I can be dragged by car from Hooters to Club Lagoon (It's only a few blocks.)

@18,

Ha! Exactly, lesbians should totally take it over. I bet they'd tip better too.

Posted by keshmeshi | September 7, 2007 11:11 AM
24

uh, that makes no sense...I thought most large chains did market research before they infiltrated an area...I'm not quite sure where the customer base is coming from for a Hooters or Red Balloon...Hooters skews towards tourists and surburbanites and Red Balloon to suburban women...weird, disturbing and unwanted...

And Broadway newstand lost their lease because the dimwitted, Hong Kong based landlord wants a chain in that space which probably means Bleu is doomed as well...

I'm guessing these establishments will do about as well as The Gap did...

Somebody forgot to tell the Hooters upper management about the three rules of real estate:

Location, location, location.

Worst idea. Ever.

You all understand, of course, that it will be our duty to make life as miserable as possible for all such chains that appear on Broadway, within reasonable means.

By God, sir, I will not abide another Hooters.

Posted by Broadway Warrior | September 7, 2007 11:19 AM

Don't be silly. Everyone knows lesbians don't tip. (ba dum pum)

Seriously, though, WTF is up with everyone thinking lesbians will welcome this? Hooters is geared towards straight men, and while a dyke-in at Hooters was fun a decade ago, the version of female sexuality Hooters peddles isn't attractive, to this leasbian, anyway.

I have a hard time believing this isn't a joke, though, #12 notwithstanding. Don't all Stranger writers have highlighted names when they post?

Come on, it will be fun to watch all the big tittie lesbians beat the shit out of the straight drunk guys who will be in there!

Well, if this is true the queers have lost Cap. Hill. (This was coming down the pipe for quite awhile though) So what is the *new* gay neighborhood? Southpark? Georgetown?

Posted by Cato the Younger Younger | September 7, 2007 11:31 AM
32

27 and 28 have a point, or two...that fence is covered with faux ads...and why would Hooters put in a new restaurant so close to it's much better situated location at Lake Union?

However, I am sure that a large chunk of the developers and landlords along B'way ARE trying to entice the chains to come to the new and 'improved' Broadway...

and I really don't see who the fuck is going to patronize the Red Balloon, when you have that great discount variety store across the street which carries EVERYTHING on the planet...

Posted by michael strangeways | September 7, 2007 11:34 AM
33

@31 The CD. When I moved here, I had no idea how many queers were here. Now, we just need to turn a few of the abandoned spaces into gay bars, and build a sex club, and we'll be set.

An addition to above:

Is it just me or since all the development has been happening all over town, has Seattle started to turn a little less...well Blue and more Red?

I fret there is a conservative wave coming to Seattle. And it will do to us what it did to a once Liberally held US Congress: Take us by surprise, kick us out of power and fuck everything up.

Weird. There was a Hooters in Lynnwood, which I guessed was about the most demographically-appropriate neighborhood for it, being one long wasteland of strip-malls and barely-not-white-trash residents. The damn thing went out of business! How could that be? If Hooters can't make it in Lynnwood, what makes them think they can make it on Cap Hill?

@34: Are big boobies and chicken wings conservative?

Posted by huh? | September 7, 2007 11:42 AM

@36, it is the crowd they bring in that is conservative. When was the last time you seen a Democrat do a fundraiser at Hooters. Besides, liberal straight guys do not have to suffer through the teasing of big boobies on display for window candy. Liberals get REAL sex!

Posted by Cato the YY | September 7, 2007 11:47 AM

@35 - isn't the SLU/Allentown Hooters still thriving?

Posted by genevieve | September 7, 2007 11:52 AM

From a business perspective, I think that opening a Hooters on Broadway is not at all prudent. At the same time, I can't help but notice the holier than thou, "we support diversity of opinion / lifestyle / business as long as you agree with us", "don't be surprised if we try to burn down this place" hypocrisy displayed in these comments.

@37
What? That's ridiculous. Eating wings, watching sports, and being waited on by big breasted women are what truly unite this country beyond political differences. Bill Clinton is a Democrat, for crying out loud. You don't think that guy would hang out at Hooters?

The C.D. could desperately use some more establishments for the residents, MANY of them queer including myself. Love Central Cinema, would love to see more businesses like that. Let's spruce up the Gayborhood!

If Club Lagoon (do I have that name right? the place with the car on the roof) can make a go of it on Broadway, why not Hooters?

Posted by twee | September 7, 2007 12:08 PM
44

@42, can we get the gay bars to move to the CD? We should talk to them about it. Mabye re-open Manray in the CD instead of them just folding up entirely. But to make it work you need to get a really really good GAY dance club down there. (And a realy dance club like the one from QAF) Then the breeders can have Capital Hill and all that they have turned it into!!

Posted by The General | September 7, 2007 12:44 PM

@44 If we have a dance club like QAF, I don't think I'd be able to go. I'm not in good enough shape. I would love a dance club that's better than Neighbour's (not difficult), and that has go-go boys. Oh, and that doesn't play hip-hop on the weekends. And of course, it has to have lots of nooks and crannies for illicit, drunken sex with complete strangers.

Who the hell is going to buy a $300-500K condo over a Hooters?
No single women, gay men, or older couples, the prime buyers of condos, would consider it. Straight men wouldn't live there without single women. Investors would have to rent them out at below the mortgage costs(maybe that's how we'll get affordable rentals again).
Wait for the impending failure of the Hooters, scoop up forclosures, and resell at a profit after the new Trader Joe's/Starbucks/Whatever moves in.

I'm fine with the Hooters concept, but their execution offends me. There is nothing sexy about nude-colored pantyhose, especially when worn with gym shorts.

Hate to quote the P-I, but they spoke to the developer and it's all a big joke. Check out THE BIG BLOG (horrors).

I really think the likelihood of this happening is none - I mean it's just a sticker slapped over a condo sign with other graffiti on it. But the freak out is pretty funny. The north end of broadway is dead anyway. 6 story condos aren't an improvement no matter what goes in there (I'm looking at you, Vivace).

But big gay dance clubs in the CD? No way, that would be just as obnoxious as Club Lagoon on Broadway.

Gitai and The General,

You're so right about the CD being the next gay hood. Seriously, half the members of my blockwatch are lesbians. Minimally, there needs to be a lesbian bar here that welcomes the occassional neighborhood breeder boy. Perfect spot would be this place, formerly the "The No Way Cafe" and a soul food restaurant.

Posted by Sean | September 7, 2007 1:21 PM

I like it. Anything that's two blocks from my house and full of gay ladies is welcome in my eyes.

Posted by The General | September 7, 2007 1:25 PM
56

I'm all for any gay bar closer to my house. It's nice to be within stumbling distance of the bars now, but being able to get ready five minutes in advance and be there on time would be fantastic.

puh-leeze...i've personally seen very liberal, hipstery, Cap Hill alt boy types go all ga-ga and tongue-tied when in the presense of a Hooter's waitress and they ended up tipping her $40 for a shitty meal with a $100 tab. Apparently, big fake boobs, spray on tans, and short-shorts worn with pantyhose and white socks ARE a huge turn on for our hetero inclined male friends despite their geo-socio-politico persuasion...
