Shooting the dog isn't malicious mischief. It's animal cruelty, and should be prosecuted as such. She could have attempted to shoo the dog off her property, or asked someone to get their dog. NOT SHOOT IT.

Her kids were walking the dog, ON A LEASH, and the dog strayed a few steps into one of their neighbors' yards. The old sonofabitch came out on the porch and SHOT THE DOG, right in front of the kids, and with willful disregard of the danger to the kids. The kids were horribly traumatized. They probably should have pressed charges against the old bastard, but they were all too scared of him. (My friend was a white woman married to an African-American man, and the kids were obviously mixed-race - and the old prick had made nasty racist cracks to them before. I've always wondered if he also shot at the harmless, friendly dogs of white children.)
