While initially considered to be unremarkable rap lyrics, authorities soon discovered that DMX's refrains of "Where my dogs at?" and "Get at me dog" were in fact plaintive cries for help...

The silver lining to these stories is that they expose hip-hop as the gutter, animal culture that it really is. It's too bad folks are so crippled with liberal white guilt that they feel they don't have moral authority to call it as such.

Posted by ektachrome | August 26, 2007 2:43 PM

Assuming you're talking about the disgraced quarterback, and not Vapo-Rub, it's Vick. Not Vicks.

Posted by Mahtli69 | August 26, 2007 3:52 PM

Wrong. My mom's a neighbor (small town, eh?) and she's never heard of Michael Vick nor DMX, I can guarantee that. People can be incredibly stupid about leaving animals outside in 115 degree heat w/ no water - we won't get started people who leave their dogs or worse, kids, in cars... One man tried knocking several times to speak to the owner of the house, but no one answered the door. So, yes, authorities were called in.

I know you were looking for a "let's all gang up on the black guys now" angle, but you're wrong. However, tomorrow's another day, Charles, and there'll be yet another opportunity to cry black-dude injustice. We all know that's what you get out of bed for in the morning anyway.

I thought there was no evidence that the dogs HAD been used for dog fights and DMX is just being charged for animal cruelty. Or at least that's what I heard on CNN. Still fucking bizzare, if anything alluding more to the character of the people who want this dog as to the dog itself.

ha! @6, yes, because all musicians from all other genres have their acts together. the jazz of amy winehouse, the pop of lindsey lohan, the rock of pete doherty...

Posted by infrequent | August 26, 2007 6:51 PM

Infrequent @10:

Not to mention Phil Spector.

@ 6 -

Not so fast. You're ignoring some cultural bias here. White men are notoriously fond of gunning down deer and fowl with seemingly little problem.

White men also have a legendary bond with the canine that is pretty unique to their culture.

All of this outrage over Vick and now DMX seems a little specious and it wreaks a tiny bit of a sort of latent racism that complicates things.

Look, the dog is no more valuable a creature than a human or an elk. You see me working here? From a PETA stand point you can easily sort this out but you should consider that your "moral authority" is absolutely supported in this case by Western reverence for the dog.

Many of the talkingheads on cable today who want to villify DMX and Michael Vick are pro gun retards who have no problems with the wholesale slaughter of cows, fowl, deer and on down the list but let a black man make one single move on their beloved and sainted canine and suddenly lives are being picked apart under round the clock broadcast.

You really should slow down on that "expose hip-hop as the gutter, animal culture that it really is." rehtoric. C'mon man, you sound like Columbus describing his first encounter with "the heathens". That don't sound funny to you? Deigning to be the moral compass for every other culture so things feel safe and familiar to you? Wow.

Killing dogs is wrong. Game over. Just slow down on the moral elite shit, OK?

Posted by Dog Park | August 27, 2007 12:43 AM

Wow, look who came over all the way from the Seattle Weekly just to say hi - it's the Uptight Seattleite @12

No one said killing dogs or any other kind of animal was "right" so using white men hunting to defend the violence and misogyny of hip-hop is apples-to-oranges.

Go wring your tit somewhere else.

Posted by Hackey Sack | August 27, 2007 5:33 AM

ok, isn't this the same DMX who shot and stabbed his mother in 1999? nuff saif guys.

Posted by wtf | August 27, 2007 8:50 AM

@12 certainly no one said that. but other wrongs do not make this wrong acceptable.

beyond that, do you think dog fighting is the same as game hunting? the end of an animal dead by human hands does not equate them. there means, the method, and the intent of the human involved are all also at play. not to mention that dogs can live as fighting dogs for quite some time... and might occasionally even harm other people (say it isn't so, that a pitbull might ever escapte and maul someoone!).

Posted by infrequent | August 27, 2007 9:20 AM

most dog fighters are southern white men. most dog fighting takes place in the rural south in poor white communities. overwhelmengly the people that get busted for dog fighting are black. it doesnt make it right, and if you put dogs to death you should pay, but dont try to say that racism doesnt play into this.

Posted by SeMe | August 27, 2007 9:53 AM

With respect to dog fighting, I thought ... this was a little more complicated than a simple a racist blanket. Game hunting and dog hunting I don't think are easy to compare. I think bird shot is particularly gruesome, but deer hunting isn't AS bad. Then again, you shoot, you kill, it's over, you celebrate. You don't pit deer against each other in a pit of death.

Which makes me wonder why white people haven't thought of that one yet?

Posted by OR Matt | August 27, 2007 1:22 PM

@ Everyone AFTER 12, except SeMe

First @ 13, wrong. I'm from a city that hasn't elected a white mayor or police chief save for once each (if memory serves) in my 35 years. I'm from a city where whites have long been a minority in the populace. I have NEVER held any position of advantage or opportunity among whites and neither has any of the handful of white persons I knew growing up. The white guilt thing here is a pretty presumptuous and slippery slope. I'm not that guy. I am far from the "Uptight Seattlite" stereotype. I highly doubt that the Uptight Seattlite used to hide his .45 in the head rest of his '69 Impala and dance to Zapp on the weekends. I don't think the Uptight Seattleite got his perspective on race relations at Wayside.

Back to the topic, I really shouldn;t need to qualify my opinion by showing you my TRW.

Hip hop is only peripherally involved here and in fact has kinda been injected. We could just as easily be expoundng on the evils of Pro Sports Culture or some equally ridiculous notion. Worse, hiphop has been codified to mean "black people" when a conveneint and plausible denial of racism is needed. Nobody is seeing how this sort of thing feels a little racist? Dragging hiphop into this? None of you need it explained that hip hop IS NOT characteristically defined by "Pimps, Hos, Guns, Drugs and Dogfights". I know you don't need that old chestnut brought out EVERY SINGLE TIME.

I wish you wouldn't say that I'm defending dog fighting. I'm not. I'm trying to give some perspective. I'm pointing out a cultural bias in the coverage and the public response. Mr. Vick will have to take his lumps. I contend that this wouldn't be happening to him in The Eastern Hemisphere because dogs aren't so beloved there. I'm not the Charleton Heston of Dogfighting so can we cut the crap, so to speak?

I see some (sourceless) stats and info being quoted here:

@14 DMX shot and stabbed his mom? Sources? It's news to me and if this is true, well he should still be in jail not living in Arizona abusing animals, right?

@16 Most dogfighters are rural whites? Sources? Thatt wouldn't be totally surprising. I have firsthand awareness of the enormous cockfighting culture in places like Arkansas and Louisiana via my father but the extent of my experience with dog and cockfighting is what I encountered growing up myself. if what you're saying is true, my rant is pretty well unsupported. I still don't think that fact lends itself to discrediting my observation: dogfighting is demonized in the states largely due to the west's love of the canine. If they didn't give a shit about the canine they'd serve it at McDonalds.

Anyhow, I was less trying to pontificate, more looking for objectivity. The media circus surrounding this whole "dogfighting is the new evil sweeping the nation" thing has seemed a little suspect to me.

Posted by Dog Park | August 27, 2007 2:11 PM

French philosopher Deleuze is incorrect, although me reading philosophy passages as literal probably makes me MORE incorrect.

The bark is not a product of "the animal kingdom" exactly, but actually a trait of domestication - and useful to humans for obvious reasons. Wild dogs (ancient dogs, not a product of mingling with humans) don't bark. They howl, squeak, yelp, wine, and laugh, but they don't bark.

PBS' "History of Dogs" ruled, BTW!

dudes you dudes realize that dmx didn't have anything to do with this? some caretaker dude slacked on watering them dudes and dudes, it sounds like it was messy, dude.

dudes i guess what i'm asking you dudes is dudes, did anyone else realize that the dude that was actually charged with animal cruelty IS SOME WHITE DUDE?

Posted by dudes | August 27, 2007 3:44 PM

I never even would have thought all this was a racist thing - I guess I wouldn't know who is into dog fighting because I ain't never been to a dog fight.

I've always thought owning pitbulls was a lesbian thing.
