Horrible, horrible people. Here in Ann Arbor, the only gay bar had a fundraiser asking folks to pledge $$ for every minute the loons from Westboro were picketing in town. Miserable loons.
Yes, you should cease to be shocked. Westboro Baptist Church comes to protest at absolutely _any_ event, gay-related or not, where it might get an audience. They are attention whores first and foremost.
If there's any upside, it's the potential damage they can do to the image of the religious right. I think the pejorative "Westboro Baptist Republican" needs to be part of the everyday political lexicon.
It's ok Dan. It is reassuring that most of us haven't become desensitized to this bullshit. yet.
Yeah, I'm still pretty shocked at whatever comes out of their mouths. But aren't their numbers slowly dwindling, thus hopefully ensuring that they all die out while I'm still alive to dance on their graves?
"Land of the Sodomite Damned".
Never have I been so proud to be from Minnesota.
ps- "that area of Minneapolis is like the fag-dominated Castro District of San Francisco"?!? As with everything else, they got this wrong, too. The center of GLBT life in Minneapolis is Loring Park and Uptown, nowhere *near* the bridge. Dumbfucks.
God, Fred's still alive? You see, this is the shit that proves there is no God. That, and the Bible. Pick. 1.
When one of them dies, we should picket their funerals and claim that they died as punishment for worshiping a hateful God.
Well apparently God let the Gays pass over the bridge and dropped it while the Hets were on it. Ummmm is there a recruiting opportunity here? Marketing grist for our Homo agenda? There is biblical precedent I believe, something about the "chosen" people passing and the conflagration consuming Pharaoh or whatever.
No, no, no. This can't actually be REAL is it? This isn't some sort of sick joke flyer?
@1 A number of bars have done that, and I think it's the best possible response. Well, that and huge number of counterprotesters surrounding them and singing Kumbayah and We Shall Overcome.
Are you talking about the parting of the Red Sea, the safe passage of the Hebrews, and then the waters closing in around Pharoah's armies and drowning the soldiers? Part of the Moses story and all that. I'm confused as to how you got the "conflagration" in there. Wrong element?
@11 Good one Dan!
Fuckity Fuck Fuck!!!
Look what Fucking Dan Fucking Savaage Fucking wrote in Fucking October Fucking 2002
Excerpt from \\\"Say Yes To War\\\" by Dan Savage October 2002
\\\"War may be bad for children and other living things, but there are times when peace is worse for children and other living things, and this is one of those times. Saying no to war in Iraq means saying yes to the continued oppression of the Iraqi people.\\\"
Well, they're already in Wisconsin in my hometown, protesting the funeral of a soldier that was killed in Iraq, so I'm sure they're looking at the Minneapolis bridge protest as just a happy coincidence, being only a hop, skip and jump of a roadtrip away.
This hellfire and brimstone they're so obsessed with telling us all about? I've not doubt that they'll be partaking of it themselves someday, though never soon enough for me.
i am having a thinking boycott about that organization. there is nothing Christian about them really. I honestly don't think they believe in what they say, because even if you did believe in what the bible says, there are plenty of other things in the bible which say love one another.
So i have concluded that this group exists only for attention. if they regarded science or people's emotions, or the Bible they claim to follow, then they would not be doing this.
You see this is an organization of people who just want to be famous, either that or a discreetly pro-gay organization, seeing as even Sean Hannity supports gays to contradict them.
So whatever, i don't think this is a way to become famous so i don't think about them, and people should just ignore them forever.
Yeah...this is really interesting and shocking...or something. This is America, home of the hate-filled.
And speaking of, Dan, would you ever buy your son a Firefly? I've found a surprisingly small amount of sites that have criticized the options available in terms of buttons.
When Dan Savage wrote this in Oct. 2002 he was saying that the death of children in the Iraq war was acceptable.
\"War may be bad for children and other living things, but there are times when peace is worse for children and other living things, and this is one of those times. Saying no to war in Iraq means saying yes to the continued oppression of the Iraqi people.\\\"
So why don\\\'t we apportion Dan Savage his fair share of the carnage in Iraq? Let\\\'s arbitrarily assign him responsibility for the death of, say, an eight year old Iraqi girl. That sounds about right doesn\\\'t it? That still leaves 649,999 dead Iraqis to be apportioned out to Bush and the neo-cons and other war supporters.
Man, I followed Dan's link... that warning page needs a warning page, I think.
@15 Maybe some of them like the attention, but I fear most of them believe. There is a kind of intoxicating feeling of power when you belong to a group that excludes others as inferior. Did Nazis exist "only for attention"?
looks to me like they need to hire a style-conscious queer to design better flyers. that piece of shit makes my eyes hurt, and not just because of the content.
Fred and his cult FEED on publicity; that's what it's always been about since day one. He has an overwhelming urge to be famous/infamous. So DON'T give in to the urge to link to him. I'm not saying we can ignore him but don't play into his hands.
Fred's been on deaths door for 20 years. I lived in To-puka and I was at the first counter protest to Fred and people in town reassured each other that Fred was 'not well' and everyone knew he had cancer and wouldn't be around long to continue his harangue. Well, that was back in 93/94 and the old he-goat is still kickin' it and nauseating the public with hateful rhetoric and the sight of him in skin tight Lycra running shorts...Ironically, Fred is a skinny old demagogue and most of his hateful brood are incredibly and predictably FAT. One of the proudest moments in my life is when I flicked a lit cigarette at his evil, porcine daughter Margareene when they were protesting at a Bernadette Peters concert in To-puka.
She cursed and spat at me but I escaped unharmed to enjoy the pleasures of Ms Peters singing Sondheim's greatest hits...
These people were here in Fairport NY last week picketing a memorial service for 5 high school cheerleaders who died in a car crash... their signs said "God killed your kids" (among other things). You think you're desensitized to this crap, but it really hits you when it's so close to home. Their reasoning was that Fairport High had a GSA. Sickening. So yeah, we should probably just ignore them but.. damn. It's hard.
Phelps died long ago- his body still animates through a potent combination of hatred and formaldehyde.
And what about those God-hating miners in Utah? Did God trap them?
The Westboro Baptist Church activities are great in a way. They should get even more visibility.
Few things more quickly marginalize anti-gay attitudes than their sort of hate filled spew.
It would only get better if they would burn more American flags.
They are so extreme in their behavior that I sometimes wonder if they are just putting on an act. They do a lot of (probably unintended) indirect good by way of their nasty, vicious, and irrational tirades. While I like to hope that people like this secretly harbor attitudes opposite what they say, I do think they can be as insane as they appear. It's unfortunate.
Dan - you can be a real dink sometimes
The thing about Phelps and his clan are that most of them are related. I don't know if that means Fred is breeding with his own daughters to produce his own grandkids (but that would explain a lot!)
These poor kids never had a chance to be human. Phelp's screed is all they have ever heard. No child ever thinks his parents or family is lying to them. Parents are perfect in most children's eyes.
The children are nothing more than political tools. One of Fred's daughters was recently indicted on child abuse or neglect or something along those lines for having her young son trample the US flag which was a violation of some local laws.
(Okay, my details were a bit off, but here's a link http://www.religionnewsblog.com/18444/westboro-hate-group-3 )
Seems like someone needs to open a killer new Gay Dance Club right next door to them in Topeka. That will keep them busy for a while.
I am so stealing "Westboro Batshit Church". Describes 'em perfectly.
I still say Michael Moore had the right idea with Freddy, following him around with the Big Pink Bus full of drag queens.
No, Fred's kids are evil, too...a couple that weren't, escaped and were disowned...in the early years, pre-infamy, Fred had his kids sell candy door to door to support the family so he could devote more time to his causes...oh, and he started as a lawyer but was disbarred...apparently you can't be defrocked as a minister if you start your own church...I knew this guy in Topeka who went to law school with Fred...He was loony back then, too...He protested against JFK 'cause he was an evil Catholic...
I wanna fuck Fred Phelps and have some lesbian love with that little minx, Shirley Phelps.
In front of their followers. And I'll moan LOUD during my orgasms too.
this guy is sick. i live in topeka and it is so sad to see those kids being forced to hold those signs. he has all his grandkids out there protesting. some are probably 6 or 7. you cant do anything to them though, they have cameras filming, so they can sue you! crazyness
How sad that anyone still pays any attention to these morons. Sadder still is the fact that they continue to let themselves be led by a lying, hateful and ignorant man. Phelps is king of his littel castle, and the more attention he gets, the more powerful he feels. Ignoring these people is the most powerful weapon against them. Please stop giving them coverage.
