Horrible, horrible people. Here in Ann Arbor, the only gay bar had a fundraiser asking folks to pledge $$ for every minute the loons from Westboro were picketing in town. Miserable loons.
Yes, you should cease to be shocked. Westboro Baptist Church comes to protest at absolutely _any_ event, gay-related or not, where it might get an audience. They are attention whores first and foremost.
If there's any upside, it's the potential damage they can do to the image of the religious right. I think the pejorative "Westboro Baptist Republican" needs to be part of the everyday political lexicon.

Well, they're already in Wisconsin in my hometown, protesting the funeral of a soldier that was killed in Iraq, so I'm sure they're looking at the Minneapolis bridge protest as just a happy coincidence, being only a hop, skip and jump of a roadtrip away.

i am having a thinking boycott about that organization. there is nothing Christian about them really. I honestly don't think they believe in what they say, because even if you did believe in what the bible says, there are plenty of other things in the bible which say love one another.
So i have concluded that this group exists only for attention. if they regarded science or people's emotions, or the Bible they claim to follow, then they would not be doing this.
You see this is an organization of people who just want to be famous, either that or a discreetly pro-gay organization, seeing as even Sean Hannity supports gays to contradict them.
So whatever, i don't think this is a way to become famous so i don't think about them, and people should just ignore them forever.

Fred's been on deaths door for 20 years. I lived in To-puka and I was at the first counter protest to Fred and people in town reassured each other that Fred was 'not well' and everyone knew he had cancer and wouldn't be around long to continue his harangue. Well, that was back in 93/94 and the old he-goat is still kickin' it and nauseating the public with hateful rhetoric and the sight of him in skin tight Lycra running shorts...Ironically, Fred is a skinny old demagogue and most of his hateful brood are incredibly and predictably FAT. One of the proudest moments in my life is when I flicked a lit cigarette at his evil, porcine daughter Margareene when they were protesting at a Bernadette Peters concert in To-puka.

These people were here in Fairport NY last week picketing a memorial service for 5 high school cheerleaders who died in a car crash... their signs said "God killed your kids" (among other things). You think you're desensitized to this crap, but it really hits you when it's so close to home. Their reasoning was that Fairport High had a GSA. Sickening. So yeah, we should probably just ignore them but.. damn. It's hard.

The Westboro Baptist Church activities are great in a way. They should get even more visibility.
Few things more quickly marginalize anti-gay attitudes than their sort of hate filled spew.
It would only get better if they would burn more American flags.
They are so extreme in their behavior that I sometimes wonder if they are just putting on an act. They do a lot of (probably unintended) indirect good by way of their nasty, vicious, and irrational tirades. While I like to hope that people like this secretly harbor attitudes opposite what they say, I do think they can be as insane as they appear. It's unfortunate.

The thing about Phelps and his clan are that most of them are related. I don't know if that means Fred is breeding with his own daughters to produce his own grandkids (but that would explain a lot!)
These poor kids never had a chance to be human. Phelp's screed is all they have ever heard. No child ever thinks his parents or family is lying to them. Parents are perfect in most children's eyes.
The children are nothing more than political tools. One of Fred's daughters was recently indicted on child abuse or neglect or something along those lines for having her young son trample the US flag which was a violation of some local laws.

How sad that anyone still pays any attention to these morons. Sadder still is the fact that they continue to let themselves be led by a lying, hateful and ignorant man. Phelps is king of his littel castle, and the more attention he gets, the more powerful he feels. Ignoring these people is the most powerful weapon against them. Please stop giving them coverage.
