Slog - Comments on Weekday--Again? WTF? http://slog.thestranger.com/2007/08/weekdayagain_wtf KUOW's morning show is on twice a day now. Or Weekday is being rehashed on something called "KUOW Presents." Uh... whatever, KUOW. Isn't one dose of Weekday per day punishment enough? Thank goodness I'm listening on iTunes, so I can switch to WBEZ in Chicago or WNYC in New York or KQED in SF, and catch up on the programming the geniuses running KUOW figure I don't wanna hear anymore. The BBC World Service is on now at KQED in SF right now. It's not on in Seattle until 1 AM. Thank God for iTunes.... With the cutbacks of funding from the federal government and the rising costs of programing, both stations agreed it was best not to duplicate broadcasts in the same market. So the early afternoon "Fresh Air" was eliminated on KUOW, but still lives on KPLU at 6:30 PM. "Marketplace" disappeared from KPLU at 6 PM but is still heard at KUOW at 6:30 PM.

Kinda makes sense not to duplicate, no?

I came to the conclusion that 24/7 micro-saturation-coverage of Iraq etc was bad for my mental outlook; I'm already well aware of how disastrous the world situation is and what a bunch of evil vampires Bush and his overlords are, but having it pounded at your ears non-stop just isn't healthy. Also at the time KUOW seriously pissed me off because for years they did not offer their online orginal-program downloads in Quicktime-compatible format (since remedied). Now I listen mostly to Canada's CBC Radio 2 on 92.1 FM and life is good. Virtually all the interesting NPR/PRI/etc shows are available on-demand or streamed online somewhere. I realize that there is a big funding problem looming for public radio, but I'm afraid that in the long run ongoing generational-shifts are going to prove it to be a baby-boomer-centric phenomenon.

It's a digital format that KUOW's been broadcasting in for a couple of years. The quality can be quite good. KUOW gets a few "extra" digital only channels due to the format, and they broadcast BBC Radio 24 hours a day on 94.9-3 (HD 3). HD Radio tuners now cost as little as $100 (Radiosophy), and you can get modules for car radios or specially equipped car radios, too. (By posting this, I guarantee someone will follow up with all the political and financial issues about HD Radio. Forget all that. It's digital, it sounds good, and you get more programming choices.)

For low-fi listeners, the KUOW-clone at 91.7 runs "Fresh Air" and lots of national/int'l programming... enuff that they get a button on my car radio (w/ KPLU, KEXP, KBCS, KING, &, YES- I'M A 97 YO WHITE MALE).
