Was he previously in league with Satan?

Um, Dan, wouldn't all those "You Will Know Us (Christians) By Our..." crowd fit your definition of people who "found Jeebuz" before they were caught doing something criminal?

I agree, shouldn't they be wondering what 'legitimate' purpose there could be in announcing this at a press conference? This guy was either personally, or bankrolling people who were, drowning dogs with their bare hands to feel the life leaving them. Is there a concept of penance in this religion he's found or has he just found a religion that absolves him of all blame? I'd like to hear about some good works that he'll be doing like Paris Hilton's work with women transitioning from prison. Wasn't she also going to be showing everyone that she isn't an idiot, how's that progressing?

I'm happy for him that he's found Jesus and all (Jesus has excellent camouflage and is very very hard to find without special glasses and hunting dogs) but whenever someone in trouble says that it just kills any hint of sincerity they had going for them.

michael vick deserves to get the book thrown at him. no question. what he did was just plain cruel.

for the record, he took full responsibility for his lying, his actions, his part in the dog fighting, and said, he is responsible for all this. the article cited here doesnt mention that and makes it seem like the first thing he brought up was jesus. not true. "hey-zeus" was mentioned afterwards. good move since he is in the south in front of what is most likely a southern baptist judge.

one more thing, is funny that the majority of dog fighters are rural white men in the white rural south, but the ones that get busted are black. im just saying.

Hey, did he have the full conversion thing with the spasms and orgasims for Jesus while screaming and throwing his arms around?

I especially loved that when saying that he'd turned his life over to God, he added "because it seems like the right thing to do at this time". Awfully telling, IMO.

@6: Uh, he took responsibility because his three coconspirators were going to spill their guts and it was the only possible way to reduce his sentence. Nothing about his admission of guilt is heartfelt; it's motivated by self-interest alone, let's not kid ourselves. Today's presser was about reducing his sentence and doing PR for when he gets out and tries to resurrect his broken career.

And can you cite your source about most dogfighters being white rural southerners?

Youre right is all PR. the point is that he didnt just embrace jesus. i said he deserves to get the book thrown at him.

SeMe, you are so correct about the dogfighting being a rural white phenomenon. That fact doesn't get brought up too often in a lot of the commentary flying around. It's also why people who are downplaying the racial aspect Vick being singled out for this are utterly full of crap.

"Dogfighting has traditionally been identified with the rural South. While that may be changing, the South still has more than its share of cases."

You can also map the cases. the rural white counties in the south have most of the cases. you have to be familiar with the south, but is a known fact that dog fighting started there. law enforcement and white folks started getting up in arms when blacks in the cities ( something brought from the white rural south) started taking it up.

ignoring the racism in all this is pure crap. im all for vick going to jail for this. he should PAY. he is cruel and a spoiled millionaire. but i get overwhelmed by how excited a lot of white folks get when a black man gets nailed for this. and some are jumping at blaming hip hop culture, but yet ignoring the white southern roots in dog fighting. after all, these dogs were originally bred by white men.

Guns were invented by white men, too. That doesn't mean it's racist to point out when a black man shoots someone.

The Dirty Souf strikes again. I'm pretty sure Jesus would not have approved of the man's need to "redeem [him]self"... That's JESUS' JOB. And God knows Jesus does love his dogfights.

Orv, of course it's racist to point out when a black person shoots someone, because you are necessarily being selective with what you are pointing out. The people commenting here who are using cherry picked examples of shootings or other crimes by black individuals in order to impugn black culture and black people as a whole are engaging in a definitionally racist strain of argument.

I'm hoping Jesus is a large angry dog, preferably one with a mad-on for Michael Vick.

Of course, Vick's admissions exclude *gambling* on dog fighting becuase that would finish his chances at an NFL comeback. The NFL is very no-no when it comes to gambling.

I would think that churches were doing their job better if celebrity criminals stopped viewing Jesus as their PR agent instead of their Lord and Savior.

Athletes and Jesus already have a tenuous, victory-based relationship. When the team wins, it's all about God. However, a loss and his name is never mentioned. Just once, I wanna see a post-game press conference include the phrase "We were marching down the field, but then the Lord made me throw an interception that cost us the game."

Judaism does not evangelize like toxic Christianity. You either are born a Jew or you are not. It is true that some Jews must go and seek their Jewish soul. But even if a Jew converts to
another religion, they remain a Jew.

Christianity with the "finding Jesus" nonsense is flypaper for idiots. The Stanger is performing Tikkun Olum by these anti-Christian posts. Mazel Tov!

seme - while i agree with most of what you're getting at -- i don't really see the racism here. maybe that one post in the other thread about hiphop music (which was a ridiculous post that no one defended), but other than that, i think people are just worked up about cruelty to animals from people who should know better.

Were they taking question at the press conference?

"Mr. Vick says he's found Jesus. That means what, exactly, in regard to these charges?"

Actually, "and that means what, exactly?" should be asked at EVERY "I Found Jesus" celebrity press conference.

Jesus loved the tax collector, too, but that didn't make the tax collector a great guy.

So, Mr. Vick: What are you going to do for Jesus now that you've found him? Are you going to make something useful of your life? Are you going to work earnestly to pay penance for your crimes? Or are you just another tawdry hypocrite, trying to plate over your ugliness with shows of faith?
