These are a Few of My Favorite Things…

posted by on August 1 at 10:41 AM

Raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens, Hot Tamales cinnamon-flavored candies, and the ever-expanding oeuvre of Seattle Gay News Arts & Entertainment writer Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid.

Rajkhet first claimed a space in my literary consciousness with her amazing headline-writing skills, which are allowed to run free by the SGN’s proper-grammar-is-a-tool-of-the-patriarchy editorial policy. My early favorite Rajkhet headline, resting atop her review of 2001’s Stanley Kubrick/Steven Spielberg collaboration Artificial Intelligence: A.I.: More Kubrick Than Spielberg, But Still Good.

I doubt Rajkhet will ever top the loony succinctness of that dazzler, but the headline for her (rave) review of I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry comes close: Chuck and Larry: A very funny movie, timely, and a provocative shower scene.

The review that follows is also quite impressive, and features one of the more amazing parenthetical statements—”(Dan Aykroyd in his best role since Pearl Harbor)“—in recent memory.

Viva Rajkhet!

Jesus, why does every gay newspaper/book/tv channel have a prerequisite of suckage?

Is it that the artistically gifted gays defect to their straight brethren when they get into media? WHY??

Wait a minute -- the SGN gave "Chuck and Larry" a rave review? That's mental. Jesus, Mel Brooks could write a movie about it -- "Springtime for Hitler" 21st century style.

That does it. It's time for Annie Wagner to pack her shit and get the fuck out. Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid is movin' in!

OMG! Can you imagine the fun we'd have posting on her Slogs?!

I picked up the SGN the other day to see what they were writing about the registration thing (Ed Murray and Michael Shiosaki had a nice photo on the cover) and I couldn't figure out the quote about who was having a baby, Jamie Pederson and his partner or another couple in the article; the whole quote ran together and was seemingly attributed to both. That's kind of an important thing not to screw up!

All of the gays are having the babies now, yikes, even you - you just don't know it yet!!

I only look to the SGN for font and layout tips.

If you're going to show off your worldliness by using fancy words like oeuvre you may want to look up the spelling first.

I always loved when Shani (the name Rajkhet goes by) would come to review our shows. Aside from her determination to find queer subtext in EVERYTHING, we got some great reviews. Unfortunately, I could only use ...phrases... for our Press Quotes section, because it was impossible to find a single grammatically correct sentence in the whole article!

Viva Shani!

C'mon Schmader, admit it. You're a secret Aykroyd hater.

Well, all I know is that I pulled my advertising from this vile rag years ago because it was simply too embarrassing to be in. This was not because it was a Gay paper but because its editing and content was sloppier than any high school newspaper, church bulletin, or homeless person sign in the nation! It hasn't changed either!

I wouldn't say that all gay newspapers are bad either. Some actually are professionally done. The Washington, D.C., paper actually is a a good read for st8 people, too!

Seattle is just blessed with the worst. Why won't someone just put SGN out of its misery already?

AAAHHH! I just clicked the link to the review and guffawed seeing the headline, "Chuck and Larry: A very funny movie, timely, and a provocative shower scene", written three times before the actual review. A headline so nice, they had to post it thrice!

I'm with Mr. Poe on this one... Get Rajkhet on the Stranger staff!! Unpaid Blogger and others would surely whip his grammar into shape, AND close his bold tags for him.

She also has a very entertaining blog...lipstick and lust which also runs in the SGN...it's on Blogspot...it's all about people she lusts after, people she's feuding with, make-up tips and occasionally, a recipe...
