Slog - Comments on The Real Liberal?

The current Rolling Stone offers a defense of John Edwards, a blueprint for how he could win the Democratic nomination, and a number of favorable quotes about Edwards from DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas. (Is a DailyKos endorsement in the future?)...

Daily Kos is pretty democratically run, so any endorsement would probably require the votes of the hundreds of thousands of members.

Markos himself my endorse someone, but I have a feeling it's more likely he'll act as a moderator in a lively debate and then pour all his resources behind the final nominee.

I actually vaguely remember him saying that he WOULD NOT endorse anyone because he just wanted everyone to get behind whoever the nominee was.

Comment by Levislade

I gotta say, I do like the guy (especially after reading that piece), and his positions seem to be the closest to mine out of the top three. I'm not committing to anyone until I have to, but I'd be OK with him being the guy.

And for what it's worth he came out on top in a recent DailyKos survey, according to the article.

Comment by Katelyn

Edwards always comes out seeming likable after these kinds of pieces. He LIVES for these kinds of pieces. After the New Yorker's profile of him years ago, I had the same reaction that Levislade had. At this point, though, I'm wary of any leader-hopeful who comes across so incredibly well in the media. He's obviously sold his soul.

Comment by D-Dub

(Disclaimer: I like Edwards a lot, and have given him money)

@3 - Edwards has been at the top of Daily Kos straw polls for over a year. http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/7/24/105617/838

Obama is the only one even close to Edwards in those polls - which may tell you what they're worth. My understanding is that among the party activists, Hillary is last of the three top candidates, and generally the younger among those folks are going to Obama, the older to Edwards.

Don't know if that's true; but if it is, it bodes well for Edwards, because older hard core Democratic activists are the ones who will turn out to vote, give money, and organize for you. The other thing that bodes well for Edwards, IMO, is union support.

But like Markos, I'll throw myself behind whoever the Dem nominee is.

Comment by Prognosticator

I predict that John Edwards will be the first big name implosion on the Democratic side, ala John McCain. Everyone but the political class seems to grasp that the man has been running for president longer than he's been in the Senate, and that being a first-rate trial attorney is not the best preperation for the top office in the country. Just sayin'. We'll see what the voters (and donors) think.
