Free drinks on trains. Sounds like Amtrak's going for the "British train experience." Add some chanting footballers and free greasy fish and chips and it'll be just as pleasant.

Why would MADD be against free drinks? The people are on a train, it's not like it's free for the train driver (engineer?).

I think MADD might be concerned about what these people do after they leave the train, if they're still drunk when they get off.

If The Stranger would stop with the sentimentality of the NYT's coverage of poverty in Africa, maybe some advancements would be made. Besides, it's the ridiculous Christians (see Bradley's post) who provide the most hands-on aid.

Actually, it's not Amtrak, but a sub-contractor that is doing the promotion. "Taxpayer money" is not going towards innebriation ;-)

Grand Luxe Rails (or something to that effect) is attaching a string of private cars to the back of regular Amtrak trains. They promise a higher level of service, and are HELLISHLY expensive (even though they don't have the decently-paid union workers that Amtrak has)

As a train geek (c'mon, you knew that coming into this post) I am suspicious of this move, as I think it might be a way to squeeze out the regular Amtrak sleeping car service (which is also expensive, but nowhere near as expensive as the Grand Luxe people)

But the long and the short of it is that Amtrak is not giving out free booze on the long-distance trains. The only do that on Acela, and only in first class.

Of course, that "spokeswoman" did a wonderful job of muddying the waters with her ridiculous statements.

Jennifer Dunn is qualified to oversee a high school newspaper. Rupe obviously got her in there to be his lackey. It would be funny and pathetic if it weren't the same plan that this administration uses when making appointments.

That was the last straw. Doesn't matter that I've had it for years, this is way too much.

Oh, and there were lots of cops and fire trucks under the Aurora Bridge last night around 10pm.

Jennifer Dunn, Republican, who is notorious for her fierce independent spirit (not), is put in charge of overseeing editorial integrity at the WSJ? Hmmm.

#2 and #3, I think MADD has actually crossed into an "against all alcohol, all the time" policy since its inception. Drunk driving sucks, but MADD sucks too.

Also, drunk on the train is great and all, but i'd rather sneak my own on, and let others with the same proclivity towards said sneakiness get ripped right along with me. Folks that drink too much just because they think they should (i.e. the types drinking holidays and open bar weddings are generally replete with) are the last sort I'd want to be trapped on a train with.

It's amazing how many adults cannot handle their liquor. I think it's a basic social skill, and so many do not posses it.
