The Morning News

posted by on August 1 at 7:00 AM

Freedom on the march? A fascinating story about the rise of the television in Afghanistan, complete with a hilarious statistic about T.V. ownership vs. electricity availability.

Fox on the march: Rupert Murdoch gets The Wall Street Journal.

The surge on the march: Is the new Iraq strategy leading to the deaths of fewer Americans and more Iraqis?

Government spying: Bigger than you knew. But you knew that.

Gonzales: The Washington Post on Inslee’s call for impeachment.

Stevens: Now with a new threat, and exquisite timing.

Cheney: The Larry King interview.

The cursing priest: On leave after this:

It's time for Larry to go.

Cheney is smooth. Too bad he reminds me so vividly of Danny DeVito as the Penguin in that Batman movie. I can't help but think of him as pure comic evil.

And the cursing priest? It's nice that he manages to be both racist and homophobic. Another supposed Christian. Yes, a little R&R is in order for him. I wonder if he'll be lectured by his superiors on the dangers of hidden cameras or on the soul-destroying effects of hypocrisy.

The cursing priest is funny, as is the reckless rabbi.

Re: Republicans to block ethics reform bill

"Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-Miss.) said he will vote against cloture and the bill, but he was less certain about the chances of getting 33 of his peers to join him.

"I don't how many people would have enough courage to stand up and vote against a lobbying and ethics reform bill," he said. "I don't suspect there's going to be strength and dynamic leadership here, but we'll see."

Yes, another proud moment in American History.

@Andrew. I'm convinced. That Trent Lott is not only strong, but he's dynamic. He (and he alone?) has the courage to vote against both lobbying and ethics reform. A true leader.

Looks like the NYT had it right. From the 29th

As far as we can tell, there are three possible explanations for Mr. Gonzales’s talk about a dispute over other — unspecified — intelligence activities. One, he lied to Congress. Two, he used a bureaucratic dodge to mislead lawmakers and the public: the spying program was modified after Mr. Ashcroft refused to endorse it, which made it “different” from the one Mr. Bush has acknowledged. The third is that there was more wiretapping than has been disclosed, perhaps even purely domestic wiretapping, and Mr. Gonzales is helping Mr. Bush cover it up.

I'd cuss at those harassing bastards too. He's kind of a badass for daring to go out there and kicking them off.

Just finished the video. I spoke too soon. Right after I was kind of rooting for the foul mouthed priest, a completely sane woman comes out and handles it the rational, right way.

Damn women and their rational conflict squashing ways! Why can't they be priests again?

Cheney is soooo full of shit:

Well, I suppose. I try not to do that. A vice president doesn’t really run anything, obviously. The executive branch you do only what the president asks you to do. He is — he gives you assignments. But whatever authority you have is delegated by the president himself.

Arghhhhhh!

Eli, what about the glaring crime epidemic in downtown Seattle? Is that already back burner material?

Mr. Poe @ 12,

While the story is totally awesome, especially the part where the Baptist minister was "wearing a skirt when he was arrested last week after allegedly relieving himself in front of children at a car wash," and the "report also accuses Tester of offering police officers oral sex and says an open bottle of vodka and empty oxycodone prescription bottle was found in his car," that website is super disturbing.

Did you see under Slideshows where it says "Teens feet cut off at Six Flags."

WTF??!!

Cheney is the biggest, lying sack of shit ever....did you all read the NYT (super long) article about him a couple weeks back?

It's Mark Mitchell @ 6,

I know! And Uncle Ted Stevens (R-Hell)is leading the bold charge for lawmakers, and I use that term loosely, to keep their bribes one day after the FBI and IRS raided his house!! You can't make this s&*t up!

Didn't Uncle Ted once tell a paper that if Alaskans wanted an honest Senator they would have voted for someone else (or something like that)?

@13

WOOT!

Speaking of Six Flags, are they still paying teens to high five your hand when you're leaving? Holy shit did that piss me off. There is no way around it, and they go out of their way to high five every fucking person trying to leave, creating a line of absolute bullshit. Like we weren't already sick of fucking lines, we have to stand in one to leave. So all of us can smack this fuckheads hand. Woo. Fun.
