John Kerry may look like a Frenchman, but George W. Bush vacations like one.
On Thursday, Bush left for a weekend in Kennebunkport, Maine, and his family’s summer compound, Walker’s Point. On Monday, he heads to his Crawford retreat, where he has spent all or part of 418 days of his presidency, according to Mark Knoller, a CBS News White House correspondent and meticulous record-keeper….The presidential vacation-time record holder is the late Ronald Reagan, who tallied 436 days in his two terms. At 418 days, and with 17 months to go in his presidency, Bush is going to beat that easily.
Even so, this year’s August vacation for Bush is a contrast to previous years such as 2005, when he dragged out vacation in Texas to five weeks. That was also the year Bush remained on vacation immediately after Hurricane Katrina hit….
Bush, on his 10th visit to Kennebunkport as president (according to Knoller), is scheduled for lunch Saturday with French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Indeed, on the issue of vacation, at least, Bush is much like a pleasure-seeking Frenchman. According to Expedia.com, French workers get about 39 days off a year and generally take all but one.

I can not belive I am going to defend Bush (sorta, kinda on this one). For anyone who pays attention to this vacation the President of the United States does not totally veg out. They get working vacations which comes down to doing their job on vacation the only difference being they are not in DC. (He still gets breifings, though probably does not pay attention to anything or read anything but look who we are talking about).
They still get to work but yeah, he is not someone who needs to take vacation since he has taken a vacation from work since January 20 2001 every single day.
What Cato said. I know it's fun to think of Bush as a drooling idiot sitting in front of "Three's Company" reruns, but the reality is that the president works pretty much continuously, 16 hours a day, no matter where he is.
@ Fnarf, since we sorta defended the idiot in the White House, have you vomitted yet? I have...
No, but I took a shower and brushed my teeth twice.
fnarf, bush isn't AWAKE 16 hours a day, much less working.
the narcissistic fuckhead goes to bed a 9.
I bet Bush does a lot of lounging. He may have to be on passive alert 16 hours a day, but is he really working? That's what the big boys are for. So I would guess that on vacation he has a lot more passive alertness time (i.e. he actually DOES less - whatever it is he does) compared to when he is at the White House. I mean, there are no branches to chop and fences to mend , or sailboats to tan on, in D.C.
Do you REALLY want him working harder at what he's trying to do?
@7 Fuck no. As far as I'm concerned he could sit his pasty white ass in Crawford until the next inauguration day and we'd probably be a lot better off.
@8, but not if it means that instead of Bush working we have CHENEY being "the decider". we all know Cheney is a mutant robot who works 23 hours a day anyway.
He should summer in Iraq. Outside of the Green Zone.
