Republican Senator Larry Craig symbolizes the current condition of the Republican Party. His inability to deal with the facts, the reality of his situation ("I'm not a gay, and have never been"), corresponds with the party's inability to deal with the facts of the war, the bad facts of Hurricane Katrina, the worsening facts of President Bush, and the looming facts of the environment and the economy. If Craig is the leading symbol of his party's condition... On Tuesday, Mr. Craig, 62, held a news conference to defend himself, calling the guilty plea “a mistake” and declaring, “I am not...

@1, not really. He might be able to get it up by imagining his wife's lovely pussy is a nice tight boy-ass. There are ways of getting around sexual barriers when you really must.

Of course, he still *might* be bi. But he's still a lying hypocrite, and that's the key point.

--An 18% Congressional job approval rating constitutes "recuperation and rejuvenation"?

That's the overall approval rating. Most people, when asked about the performance of their own Congress-person, usually say they think they're doing an okay job.

That aside, the Dems are in a better position than even the most positive polling numbers indicate. A friend of mine recently had lunch with a researcher for Congressional Quaterly and he said every bit of internal data he sees indicates the GOP is going to get a shellacking in 2008. He also predicts that Hillary will be the next prez.

BTW, this same researcher was telling my friend, months before the mid-term elections, that the Dems were going to retake the House and Senate, based on similar data.

Secret Squirrel: I don't dispute anything you said; everything does point for more gains for Democrats next year, although nearly every poll says that people like their rep, "it's the other guy that's the problem".

My point is what good is having seats/branches in government if you're not going to use your power? The failure of the Democrats in Congress to deliver (or go to the mat for their ideas) is why their approval is in the crapper.
