This is just plain fucked - one-day events are one thing, eliminating all public access (and not just to those darn Wallingford NIMBY's you like to rag on) to a major park for over a week during August (or, really, any other month) is unconscionable.

Of course, under Nickels, the City Government doesn't have much of a conscience anymore, but that doesn't make this private sector lockout of a public park right, or defensible public policy.

I'm preety damn sure that they can't eliminate public access...everyone is misunderstanding "private party" I-41 requires parks to be used for park purposes. they can let private people (for a fee) come in and use the party for their event but they can't keep you out. it makes weddings at Seattle Parks funny, cuz the weddings often have the general public (not wedding guests) wandering through...

I much prefer the kind of rich people who piss away their wealth and power while flashing their twats for the paparazzi or throwing grandiose parties in Gasworks Park.

The kind of rich people I can't stand are the ones who parley their influence into a Senate seat, then get their meathead son elected Governor of Texas, then install the little prick in the White House, leading to the near collapse of civilized government and a series of botched illegal wars, all the while making their rich pals even richer at the expense of the taxpayer.

You don't have to like people like Paris Hilton or the British Royal family, but at least they're harmless. Mostly.

If you actually went out and found out some facts "mr x", you would find that the park has not been closed at all this week. In fact they were showing people around and explaining what they were planning on doing. A very small portion of the park is being used for the party, FOR ONE NIGHT.
There's alot of (in fact ALL) local talent being employed to create and perform at this event. Not to mention that the news has disclosed the huge sum payed to the parks...

Good - I stand corrected (I never said the whole park was closed, btw - just the waterfront chunk they're using).

However, to call their staging area "a very small portion of the park" is ludicrous - and it ain't just one day that that portion has been/is/will be unusable to the general public.

Also - neither of the major daily paper articles on this event disclosed what the rental fee was - do tell...

I am likely wrong, but Melinda birthday is this Wednesday.. could it be a birthday party for her? Local talent only? Eastside sax player? I do not think $5000 is enough for use of the park, but that is the citys fault for not charging enough. If they can affore this thay can afford 10 times that amount. However I doubt any park goer is being denied access, especially tonight. I will be there tonight to check out the fireworks and live music from the water.. Paddle on.

"It's my understanding that the party host plans to make a financial donation to Seattle Parks & Recreation," committee chair Virginia Swanson is quoted as saying in an e-mail circulated by Friends of Gas Works. "The fee to date paid for the Park Use Permit is $2,865 and the Special Event Permit fee is $2,195 - the latter fee is based on the anticipated attendance of 300 guests."

Did it ever go off?
We went down there and watched them filming the movie, heard the choirs sing, "oh happy day"
but it was 10:30 and getting really cold when we left!
I have been on movie sets before and this one was the usual, a big giant HURRY UP and wait! I didn't get in on the $100 pay for extras so I didn't wait.
Can't wait to hear more about it though!

We totally snuck in and crashed the party, free booze and art rules! So what if it was thrown by an unknown "philanthropist" (rich guy)... he threw a damn good party! Walking in, we just happened to be in the right place at the right time and ventured in with the guests fresh off the Duck boats. (If you act like you belong, then you probably do.) Upon walking in, we were handed glasses of wine and hors d'oeuvres, totally cracking me up that it had all been that easy.

Crazy f'ing night man, and so unexpected! I guess the universe was on our side.
