Service to Country

posted by on August 8 at 10:08 AM

Ouch.

Despite his call for the nation to show a “surge of support” for U.S. forces in Iraq, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on Wednesday defended his five sons’ decision not to enlist.

The former Massachusetts governor said his sons were showing their support for the country by “helping get me elected.”

Oh please let Romney win the GOP nomination. Just get it over with. Then it will be a matter of picking apart how the Dems will run things in 2008.

Helping another war hungry Republican take office is more important than enlisting. There will be plenty of time to enlist once this is done. (In more ways than one.)

But we all know that won't happen. They'll serve their country by going on a mission. Or something. Anything but enlisting.

...after 2008. Sorry.

In its own way, Tagg Romney driving around Iowa in an RV is just as courageous as going on patrol in Falluja.

Romney's five sons range in age from 37 to 26 and have worked as real estate developers, sports marketers and advertising executives.

"You can tell from their occupations that they're total LNS-style douchebags, but they're not stupid enough to sign up to be George W Bush's bullet sponges," Romney added.

Honestly, what are Romney's odds? I can see him beating Hillary, depending on who she's with. (It would be nice if she paired with Obama, which will never happen. I'd like to see her pair with Richardson, but, you know, nobody likes him but me.) I can see him taking Obama. What's going on with Obama? He's been acting like an idiot for almost a month now.

@4

Nice.

You know, I get this feeling that Mormons the nation over are thinking that perhaps Mitt wasn't the best choice to be the first serious Mormon candidate for the presidency.

For some reason I can't shake the feeling that we'll still lose. Bush won. Twice.

Now, the voters who continued to stand behind Bush are going to have to make a decision that will either be a black man or a woman. Keep in mind the way most of our country thinks.

I'm not saying I truly believe we'll lose. I'm just saying I can't exactly say, "We totally got it in '08."

Mr. Poe-

Also keep in mind that the fundie asshats who voted for Bush consider Romney to be part of a cult. His loudest critics come from Evangelical backgrounds, not Democrats.

Without the Christian base that saved Bush's ass, his chances of being elected are slim to none.

Face it, Red Bushies are not just unpatriotic, they're cowards.

Period.

Excuses don't wash when there's an unnecessary war to die for oil in.

Mr. Poe, I too like Bill Richardson. I got to hear him speak a few years ago in MN. Spooky smart. If he could pick up a little momentum, he could be a contender. Good Veep material.

Mr. Poe-We could still lose this thing. People are overly confident. Especially if Hillary gets the nom-I think Guiliani would win. Romney, not so sure. I'd like to think that there's no way he could ever win, but given that Bush was elected, I have little faith in the populace to spot a lying scumbag.

Yeah, me either. If it didn't matter so much, it would be sort of funny to me to sit around watching a bunch of fundamentalist Christians try to decide between a Mormon and a woman, but...

@ Mr. Poe: I think that Richardson would be a great secretary of state. His economics and foriegn policy ideas don't strike me as very good, but I think he would definately be great to run matter inside the US.

Can we take Ari's post title below and use it for this post?

OMG Look What Squirrels Can Do!

I'm hoping that those Repubs frustrated with their choices will just not bother voting.

But yeah, we should be hoping this guy gets the nomination.

I do hope Romney gets the nom, because he's the easiest to beat, but don't think the fundies won't vote for him. Some won't, but many of them are happy enough with his policies (anti-abortion, anti gay marriage) that they'd give him their votes in a general election. I just hope that he's transparent enough (and the Dem candidate is strong enough) that the "independent" voters will vote for the Dem.

All the Democrats have to do to win is stay positive. Talk about what you'd like to do, not what you think is wrong. And hammer them on the Constitution; protecting the Constitution from depredation has always been a Republican platform, and it's time to call them on their bullshit in that regard.

Josh Romney should be where his country needs him -- fighting the War on Terror with the Bush Twins, doing belly shots on the bar in Rio.

The "surge of support" comes from dads of the Stranger staff. Dan, coordinate another Freaky Friday with Seniors Pool, Feit and Graves. The office is filled with such happy and proud campers, why not coopt their backers into the fold? Invite your brother as honorary commentariat.

i'd just love to see romney try to take on hillary in a debate. then again, bush looked like an idiot next to gore and kerry in every debate and still managed to win.

mr. poe, i'm glad you said it first. obama's looking like a total idiot right now. and i like richardson, too.

If Mitt's got about 60,000,000 other children stashed somewhere, he might just have a chance.

Why the fuck should his sons have to enlist? Just because their father is running for office doesn't mean they have change the paths of their lives in a cheap/costly attempt to show voters that their father has instilled his ridiculous values in them. Should a candidate's children HAVE TO support their parent? According to Cheney's daughter, no—despite what she says, she's still a lesbian and a parent. Guiliani's daughter doesn't support him—she's voting for Obama.

Also, I know plenty of "hardcore" Republicans that aren't enlisted, for the most part, because they HAVE BETTER JOBS to do than go to Iraq or Afghanistan.

It's a stupid talking point to bring up and the AP should have better things to do. If we want to win (Democrats), we should focus more attention on strengthening our own less-than-rock-solid candidates than wasting time bringing up lame non-sequiturs that voters who haven't decided won't care about. Honestly, what Republican or voter who hasn't made up their mind would really care? Their children probably haven't volunteered either, and they're probably delighted.

But gee, Clark, what better job could there possibly be than defending freedom? Remember Pat Tillman? He was a national hero.

Until his own men shot him in the face.

its funny that you people think that youre actually in a democracy. Your election system was stolen at least twice and you harp on about who votes and wins. The next "election" has already been decided. You all lost. You earned it by sitting on your couches eating bon bons and getting fat/lazy for decade after uncaring decade. Hope you enjoy your grand and glorious dictatorship of the fascist united states.

they don't have to enlist.

but it would be good if they split with dad & objected to the war. out loud. publicly.

the same goes for the bush twins.
