Slog - Comments on Re: GOP Returns GOP Money

Kittitas GOP chairman Mathew Manweller, one of the members of Dino Rossi's "nonpartisan" group Forward Washington, returned my call this morning. I had called him yesterday asking why the GOP had returned a $700 donation to him immediately after the Democrats filed a complaint alleging that Forward Washington was a front for a GOP campaign outfit. Alas, the cordial Manweller debunked my conspiracy theory this morning. He told me the money was returned because the GOP couldn't make good on the $700 cruise that he and his wife had won at a GOP auction. Man, can't the GOP even get...

Having had some experience with political fundraising auctions, I have to say, that's pathetic. Normally, your auction items are donated by supporters, often as a bit of publicity for their business. So some local Republican donated a trip on one of his boats - and then either went out of business or otherwise had the boat go out of commission, AFTER someone had paid $700 at the auction to win the cruise. And was not in a position to otherwise honor the donation. That's just lame. You make good on your promises when you donate, or else you don't promise to donate in the first place.

Oh, and I should add, there's another scenario, which, considering these are Washington State Republiclowns we're talking about, seems even more likely - sometimes auction donors, horrified at the low dollar amount their donations were won for, suddenly find themselves unable to honor the donation commitment.

"Whaddya mean, they won my cruise for $700?! That's a $2,000 cruise - why didn't anyone pay full market value for it???"
