Taking a bunch of pills and slashing a wrist is not attempted suicide. I'm sorry, but it's not. People who want to kill themselves put a gun to their head and pull the trigger. This, this is just pathetic.

Suicide isn't a laughing matter, unless we're discussing Ecce Homo, but I really don't feel bad for Mr. Wilson. At all. Dudes got it all. No pity here.

@2 - I agree. It's sounds more like teen angst than suicide attempt. I wouldn't be surprised if he also goes out and gets a new piercing or tattoo.

I don't get the totally unsympathetic attitude. It's not like mental illness is known for causing rational thought, or for avoiding people simply because they've got money or fame.

The idea that he's got nothing to feel bad about completely discounts the fact that depression can strike anyone, regardless of how well- or badly-off they are.

Yeah, I know. I would feel bad if I honestly thought he tried to kill himself. The only thing he tried to do was try to kill himself. He pulled it off. Now we can all feel sorry for him.

but suicide attempts have their place. if this is the only way he could communicate that he needed help, then it may have worked. it is selfish and unfair -- but so is successful suicide.

I still remember the day it dawned on me how shitty being a celebrity really is- I was watching some "When Paparazzi attack" show on E! and it made me sick to my stomach... just seeing how the bloodthirsty photographers and rabid fans can lead someone into isolation.

Sure the money seems great- Tommy Lee has a fucking Starbucks in his basement! But did you ever consider that he can't walk down to a real Starbucks without being harassed?

How do you know who your friends are, and who's attaching themselves to you like parasites for a glimmer of fame? It must be devastating to have someone (perhaps one of the rare few), whom you trust, completely desert you.

All I'm saying is I'll NEVER pursue fame, and I pity anyone who does in the hopes of some kind of validation for their lives.

So, if he indeed attempted to commit suicide, the next logical question is most certainly not WHY?

The next logical question should be how much respect we should pay him and his family in keeping our distance!

Depression and attempted suicide is certainly not funny. And just because he's a celebrity who seemed to have everything going for him, doesn't somehow give us license to dig up every detail about what happened and splash it all around the globe.

Jeez, our society is fucked up some times...

as a guy who tried to TRY to commit suicide in a very similar manner, i have to say...

seriously, this is a symptom of needing attention or trying to make someone feel bad about "breaking your heart," or some such other nonsense. it was stupid when i did it, and it's stupid when a celebrity does it.

I sincerely doubt this was anything having to do with a "broken heart". That's media bullshit trying to drum up something. It's doubtful he even had a relationship with whats-her-name.

#11: That is spot on. There are some celebrities that are pretty much have to be in solitary confinement for the rest of their lives. That's why they're paid so much.

For example, someone like say, Mick Jagger, really can't go outside and definitely not by himself.

I think the best thing to be is an actor that is just somewhat famous so you can get parts, but don't have to fear for your life or reputation every day. Like, I'm sure Stanley Tucci just goes about his business, gets plenty of work, and doesn't have to deal with that crap.

Seriously though, is it really a shock that fame, fortune, and the high life doesn't necessarily mean happiness and/or absence of pain? Hope he gets some help and people quickly fall off the schaudenfreude wagon.
