As Dan is oft heard saying, "I don't care about strait wedding until I have the right to marry!!" So, who cares if a couple of breeders lose treasured photos of one of the most important days in their lives. As long as Dan doesn't get to be "Married" then no tradjedy befalling out straight comrades in their moment of matrimonial bliss is worth worrying about.

This is a horrible tragedy. What makes it worse is that an off site tape backup is a really cheap and effective way to distribute your eggs across multiple baskets. Especially if you professional career depends on the data. But this is the kind of thing you can not predict, and they type of mistake that only happens once. But still, those guys are bastards.

Jenny, I'm so sorry to hear about this theft. That absolutely stinks. $20,000 is a hell of a lot of money for anyone, not to mentioned a self-employed person like yourself. Not to mention that someone broke into your home. Freakin' scary.

Part of a photographers work-flow includes back-up, but it's not always the absolute first step. First, you get them get them onto the computer, but some people want to cull the obviously fuct shots before storing on back-up.

All of my wedding photography is backed up on three external hard drives but these two particular weddings hadn't been yet.

@10 - you are correct. i was in the process of editing both weddings. I average 500-700 digital images per wedding and trim down to about 400 before copying to an external drive and begin post production (color correction, etc).

Jenny, you can purchase a commercial insurance policy that covers the replacement of your equipment (minus a $500 deductible) for less than $400/year. It'll also come with $1 million of liability, and a whole bunch besides. I know it's a little late now, but it's something you really should do for the future.

Yes, bad robbers, bad. Feel bad for the person whose livelihood is affected. It is scary to have someone break into your house.

However, I assume that equipment was insured. Yes, it sucks dealing with insurance companies, but ultimately, not a big deal. As far as the data unwittingly stolen... Let that be a lesson to us all about vagaries of living in digital age.

Even if your data is backed up, if someone steal the drive (or your house burns down and the data burns down with it) you are still screwed. Back up data off site if it is important and have contingency plan. It's difficult to throw out boxes of CDs, however it only takes a flick of a wrist to permanently delete your music collection.

To martineno - she is dealing with huge amounts of data on a frequent basis. It is just not convenient nor practical to always immediately back everything up and store offsite. It takes time, and a gazillion discs if you are suggesting she should do it that way. I have a dvd burner and a typical shoot would still fill about 3 dvds, which is time consuming, expensive, and ultimately redundant - so most people don't do it.

I back up my photography on external drives which I hide; I even have an offsite backup drive stashed with a friend, but that is only updated every 6 months. There is no good answer here I guess, but I am really sorry for her loss.

If it were me, I would not clear my media cards until backups had been made. The data loss was probably preventable.

I am not saying it is easy. There are services however that let you push data offsite almost as soon as you drop them on your drive. I found a bunch just by doing a search on Google right now:

Sure, it means that you have to pay for fast internet connection and the backup will be slow and maybe not everything will be backed up as fast as one would like. But it means that you can prevent loss of data if you loose the disk in your physical control.

I guess it all depends on how important the data is to you. There is always an element of risk.

This is of course talking 20/20 hindsight. And I still feel bad for her and I hope that the disks can be recovered. With the data on them.
