onIn this week’s Stranger, bright red fliers for this weekend’s Lake Fest were lovingly tucked between the pages of the Chow section.
I’ve had a copy of the ad staring me in the face but yesterday, I noticed a peculiar listing in the bottom right corner of the flier:
6-9pm Rochambeau Tournament
What, what, what???
As far as I knew, Rochambeau looked something like this:
Apparently not.
I called the Lake Fest people to see if they were going to have a real-live nut-kicking competition.
They aren’t.
Their version of Rochambeu looks like this:
Although they will be holding a game of kickball. Tee hee.
Am I the only one who didn’t know Rochambeau was just a silly name for rock, paper, scissors?

until recently i was right there with you thinking rochambeau was nothing but a kick in the nuts. then i started people talking about it as rock, paper, scissors.... it just seems wrong...
Didn't Annie already cover this?
I was then where you are now. I had no idea it had anything to do with RPS.
Those nut kicks are some of the stupidest things I've ever seen, though I'm glad kids like that are lessening their chances of reproducing.
Do you guys even read your own Slog?
There's a great article about this "sport" in the July-Aug utne Reader.
This was on an episode of South Park.

a nice article in the believer has also been republished in utne:

It was fun, if not a little disorganized. I played in it last year and my best friend ended up in the final two! At the very least, it was a silly way to meet everyone else at the party.
Yes, you are the only one:
