Slog - Comments on Hooray!

I am pleased to report that, after one long and torturous month, MADISON MARKET HAS LEMONS AGAIN. Finally! I can now end my personal lemon strike, which I went on in quiet solidarity with my co-op's struggle to procure the fruit, and which has slowly been making me insane. p.s. If anyone can shed light on why the Market has been without lemons, please do. I want to understand....

they had a little sign up about it this weekend. i can't remember what the explanation was, but it did make me think "so *that's* why there haven't been any lemons..."

You think that is frustrating? I live in Arizona and the Whole Foods here is frequently out of lemons and/or limes. There are lime trees in my neighborhood dropping fruit to the ground but the Whole Foods can't figure out how to get any of them in the store, despite all of the signs imploring me to "Eat Locally".

I guess I should just steal from the neighbors.

Comment by kinaidos

I'm not sure about Madison Market in particular but in general CA and AZ crops were devastated by freezes this season. Imported citrus that is available is from South America mostly and it's fumigated and thus not organic.
Unfumigated Mexican lemons are available, some organic, but they are too green for the american consumer, though they taste just fine.

Comment by J. Lasser

kinaidos has the clue here: after the disastrous weather ruined the citrus crops, Madison Market was unable to find lemons that met their quality standards. (I believe those aren't the "mmm, these are pretty and taste good" standards, but the "ethically grown, organic" standards.)

I'm torn between wishing that they'd have carried other lemons with a warning, and the notion that in doing so it would have allowed me to fool myself about the goodness of those particular lemons. By having to go to QFC and purchase them, it's easy to keep in mind that they're suboptimal.

@ 3, while I enjoy shopping at Whole Foods I find their whole "eat locally" slogan laughable given that half the produce section is stocked with southern hemisphere goods at any given time of the year.

Thanks for bringing to our attention what happens when there is a freeze or other impact on crops. There's news about it and then a few months later nobody can remember wtf. It shows how jaded we are about price fixing and we just assume it's some kind of excuse - maybe it is, maybe it isn't. lemons? oil?
