Slog - Comments on Hello Punishment Kitty

Thai police officers caught for a range of minor misdemeanours will have to sport hot pink armbands of Hello Kitty, the Japanese icon of cuteness, as a form of punishment. The striking armband features the Hello Kitty cat character invented by Japan's Sanrio Co in 1974 sitting atop two hearts. "Simple warning s no longer work," [said Police Colonel Pongpat Chayaphan] "This new twist is expected to make them feel guilt and shame and prevent them from repeating the offence, no matter how minor." There's a Ph.D. in gender studies, just waiting to be built on this story. (Thanks, Erika!)...

And they think the cops won't steal them. That's so nice, but those limited edition armbands could get the pricey on the international e-bay market.

Comment by Gomez

Well, it's not the WORST idea they could come up with.

I have an idea. The SPD should borrow this idea and take it a step farther: have cops who commit misdemeanors wear a full hot pink cop suit.

Yes, there are women in the SPD, but the idea isn't so much a sex-identity one as much as a 'this uniform is garishly loud and ugly' one.

Of course, neither idea addresses the compromise of an officer's perception of authority, but hey.

I like it. The concept of shaming seems to work especially well, and I feel it has been largely overlooked in North America.

Maybe they should do something like this in the US and Canada for misdemeanors... ;)

I don't know if shaming could work here anymore. There are too many people who just don't give a shit. Not surprisingly, they're more likely to pull stuff that's worthy of shaming.
