Heimlich Maneuver time for the M’s

posted by on August 31 at 11:57 AM

OK, normally I do not believe in jinxes. I think superstitions are bad luck.

But the Mariners’ current losing streak, taking them out of first in the Wild Card and backing them away from the Angels in the West, has precisely coincided with my visit to Seattle. And I’m leaving town tomorrow, so expect the Mariners to start winning.

And the post-season is still a distinct possibility. There’s the series against the Yankees next week, which will be key—but also remember that the Yankees don’t want the Wild Card: they want the East, and if Boston folds, they would almost have to fall past the M’s to let the Yankees get what they consider their due.

The Central race will matter too, as Cleveland and Detroit are in a dog-fight. Both have medium-tough September schedules. My prediction: that race and the Wild Card both might come down to the Seattle-Cleveland series, which will include a doubleheader to make up one of the snowed-out games from April.

But remember: if the Mariners don't make the post-season, we've got the November 18 Sunday night NFL game between the Bears and the Seahawks to look forward to. My prediction: the Bears will be 7-2 at that point, the Seahawks 6-3. It will rain and be miserable out. And the Bears will prevail on a field goal as time expires, set up for by a Danieal Manning kick return.

Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

As much as I'm looking forward to you leaving town, professor, I'd say the Mariner losing streak is more attributable to the presence of one Rick White than it is to yours. That guy is terrible. And that goatee is ridiculous. Please take this hack with you!

Ms are streaky, have been all season and are due for a big up. They are being out-managed now though. I'm not a ball fan, but have seen White in a Mets uni and he is a career choker. Last night could come back to haunt them, although I'd say that the Yanks and Sox have easier schedules.

Hawks game is here. I like the late field goal, but Brown's kicking it. How the league has as little respect as you do for the Hawks this season, but being very conservative, the Hawks have dropped 2 games by the time they beat the Bears at home on Sunday.
