My confusion is caused by the fact that my knowledge of that part of world ends in 338 BC, the year Athens falls to the military power of Alexander's father, Philip. For those of us whose heads have been filled with the history of ancient Greece (between 900 BC and 300 BC), this new catastrophe is so strange.
