Slog - Comments on Getting Out of Iraq: The View from Iowa

I agree with Jeff Zeleny. One of the most interesting exchanges of this morning's debate had to do with exactly how the different Democratic candidates propose to get U.S. troops out of Iraq—and exactly how long they think that will take. I'm in Cincinnati now, about to get on a plane back to Seattle, so I'll post more about this tomorrow. But for now, check out Zeleny's report on the debate. It gives a pretty good sense of how divergent the viewpoints are on this issue. Getting out of Iraq is (obviously) a huge problem, and one where, no matter...

i missed where any of the three top contenders for the democratic nomination said they will end the occupation of iraq. the "divergent" viewpoints among frontrunners are essentially the same-- vague and likely to prolong the occupation for years if not decades.

Given that there has never been a good way for a defeated army to leave the field, fretting over which kind of ignominious retreat we should beat is a waste of time. The way out of Iraq is very simple...

Just slip out the back, jack
Make a new plan, stan
You dont need to be coy, roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, gus
You dont need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, lee
And get yourself free

oh my, i'm listening to a downloaded version called '50 Ways to Eat Your Lover'

the first lines are:
'the problem is all in side i bet, she said to me/ the problem is easy if you practice orally/ you must enhance your foreplay cunnilingually/ there must be 50 ways...

haha, still not as neat as seeing The Squirrels do Bad Company's "Feel Like Making 'Lunch'" at the Christmas bash.

sorry for butting in, please proceed with the war color commentary

Some time back I read an article about different modes of withdrawal, and the one that I thought was most awesome was to rig all the equipment with explosives, airlift the troops out, and blow up everything behind us. Considering that it's all shot to hell anyway, blowing it up and leaving it behind won't be so bad. Then our troops come home and say good riddance, and we look forward to the horrible crime wave that's bound to follow the hundreds of thousands demobilized and heavily traumatized soldiers.

@1: I agree. Aside from Richardson and some others, what are the divergent views? How are Obama and Clinton different here?
Sounds like they have the same, phased approach.

the reason it is difficult is that when you are going backwards, exiting defensive structures, etc., the other side often shoots the hell out of your troops.

In fact, organizing a good retreat is one of the hardest military maneuvers there is.

So let's not make policy by quoting pop songs, okay?
