Yes, Portland is feeling it... ...But it's still a very long way from the day it can play with us (Seattle and Vancouver) the skyline game....

Portland is always ten years behind Seattle. I moved to Seattle from Boston to work as a software project manager and I loved the condo selection in Seattle. Portland has a bunch of moldy seventy year old houses. Yuck!

It'll be a century before Portland is as good as Seattle.

Uh, @2 have you been to Portland lately? They are putting Seattle to shame when it comes to condos. Seattle is building some really, really unattractive structures and Portland is pumping out some totally beautiful buildings. The Pearl District is one of the most amazing neighborhoods I have ever seen. I can't wait to see what Portland looks like in 10 years. If Seattle keeps this shit up I'll be down there!

Comment by Kristin Bell

I love both Seattle and Portland and it is true that some insane out-of-towners are paying megabucks for the new condos in the Pearl district in Portland. Well, I am just guessing it is out-of-towners. Who else would buy a studio condo for over $200,000 in Portland with no parking!?! I mean, maybe that would be a steal in NYC, but it is just dumb here. I guess I'm just a country bumpkin though. What do I know?

Admittedly, Portland lacks that self-loathing, defensive, whiny, can't-do attitude that is the only point of civic "pride" in Seattle.

Of course, Portland is just Portland. It's not a city that thinks it compares to New York or San Francisco, when it's really just a depressed Minneapolis, or Des Moines having a nicotine fit.

Portland's ability to build super tall massive monuments to developer ego is limited by the layout of the downtown street grid. The founders laid out blocks that are half the size of Seattle's super blocks. This means more retail on the ground level and perhaps a more humanistic scale.
