I have far too many friends who are into slash and I, in true Seattle form, nod and smile as they go off about their epic Highlander/A-Team/Anchorman crossovers.

Is there a cure?

The real problem with slash is when the actual creators think that that actually is their fanbase and start pandering to it. Buffy was victim to this.

I can't read slash, but I've certainly masturbated to my fair share of yaoi.

Slash is always hardcore porn, which is something anyone with 5 seconds to spare on the internet can find out.

Why the hell is it second? Shouldn't, by rights, all fan fic be second? Yeah, slash writers spend 8,000 words writing stories about fictional characters getting their gay on, but there's just as much heterosexual fan fic. That isn't any less bizarre.

Really, did the person who made that list have any internet access at all? Try otakin. (Urban Dictionary it).

Porn is a lot less weird than thinking that you are the reincarnation of a fictional cartoon character.

zzyzx, where did Joss do that? I've only ever noticed a few throw-away lines that implied homosexuality. (Except for the gay characters, of course). Examples, please.

Slash is *not* always hardcore porn, that should read.

that one where kirk and spock were angels and were tying each other up with the belts from their angel robes, then having sex on the surface of sun - that one was kind of strange.

So what do you mean by weird, Erica C. Barnett? Doesn't everybody want to join the Ambiguously Gay Superheroes Club?

And the Furries Fur Christ site is way more disturbing than slash fic.

The list was probably written by a straight guy. In my experience, straight guys are scared silly by fanfiction.

True Gloria, especially considering that most / fanfic (or at least "Star Trek" related K/S fanfic - which I only know about because, if you've been anywhere near ST fen in the past 30 years, it's pretty much unavoidable) seems to be written almost exclusively by straight females.

When I went retro a few years ago and grew my hair out I was approached several times by some long-haired men at both The Cuff and The Eagle who gave me cards for a Seattle long-haired gay men's club. Each of them had such a high creep-factor that I began to question the wisdom of having such attractive hair. I told one of them that it wasn't his hair that made people dislike him it was him and he accused me of having Stockholm syndrome. They have a private web site that requires one to file a photo in order to be approved for joining. They also meet at Julia's once a month to work through all of the pain of being a long-haired gay man in a bigoted world. I wish I could remember the name of that club.

I've read harry potter slash fanfic featuring severus snape having wild furry sex with an hippogryff. It can't get werider than that.

Other than it, I find smallville/nip/tuck, etc etc fanfic pretty hot. And I am supposed to be a straight girl. So I agree with the theory that most fanfic is written by straight girls.

Lots of straight men find two women together sexy; is it really that much of a surprise that lots of straight women find two men together sexy?

Look at it this way: isn't it hot that thousands of women are writing custom-made porn for each other?

I always thought of the New Testament as Torah fanfic, and the Koran as a kind of New Testament slash fiction.

But yeah. I totally thought slash fic was the weridest thing ever. In 1993.

I was conflating slash with more generic shipping. It's the shippers that can really take over a fanbase.

I was reading the list and getting all annoyed at the slash being included. I was all ready to point out that it's some uptight straight guy's pov who obviously can't stand the fact that girl's like to write their own porn and doesn't he know that everyone reads it (even though they pretend they don't) and blah blah diddy blah.

Then I read the comments and felt all warm and fuzzy inside. I should have know Stranger readers would not be squicked by porn (bored by it maybe, but never squicked).
