You really don't understand why daily papers aren't full of curse words? You really don't get how they are different from alt-weeklies? Or are you just pretending to be stupid?

It´s hard to believe you do not understand the difference Dan. It´s not hard to believe that you stopped maturing past junior high! Give me a break.

Because the readers /are/ a bunch of prissy ol' clenchbutts, one assumes. One also assumes things will be very different once all the old people are dead.

You should have prefaced: "Warning: post contains fuck words."

One time when I was in jail, I got (back my?)religion (cliche, I know, spare me the guilt.) So I'd go visit with the Catholic chaplain every now and then. One time I was puzzling over the whole concept of profanity. I went to the chaplain and explained I was starting to trip on how vulgar my language had become in jail. He said to me in his tough as nails Hells Kitchen accent, "Don't struggle with profanity. You're in jail and it fucking sucks here."

On a side note, that entire 2 year long dialog I had with that dude made me wonder if there any Catholics who are religious. (note to offended Catholics: I kid).

Fuck! Look what good ole Dan wrote back in 2002.

Excerpt from \"Say Yes To War\" by Dan Savage October 2002

\"In the meantime, invading and rebuilding Iraq will not only free the Iraqi people, it will also make the Saudis aware of the consequences they face if they continue to oppress their own people while exporting terrorism and terrorists. The War on Iraq will make it clear to our friends and enemies in the Middle East (and elsewhere) that we mean business: Free your people, reform your societies, liberalize, and democratize... or we\'re going to come over there, remove you from power, free your people, and reform your societies for ourselves\"

Trolls, whatever - if I'd said anything as incredibly stupid and arrogant as what Savage did (and I made it my full time job to be a nasty prick to anybody and everybody I disagree with), I'd expect to have my words thrown back at me for the rest of my life.

And people who want (let alone expect) to be treated as serious journalists don't use "fuck" except in a direct quote.

This is so typically Dan - fighting the culture wars while the important stuff is forgotten. Here, Dan's ignoring the demise of 162 units of affordable housing (the genesis of the e-mail tirade by John Creighton of the Port of Seattle) while he's spending his time worrying about someone's silly criticism of silly language.

Dan, it's time to get a clue - there are more battles to fight than the culture wars. One worth fighting is the battle to save the Lora Lake apartments. When will you get your head out fof your butt and turn The Stranger's truth squad on the Port of Seattle and its heartless commission?

It'd be nice to read something in The Stranger/Slog again that actually made a real difference in someone's life. Use or misuse of the word "fuck" doesn't. Dan, get a clue.

Retard @3:

You really don't understand why daily papers aren't full of curse words? You really don't get how they are different from alt-weeklies? Or are you just pretending to be stupid?

Are you really beating up a straw man? Or are you just pretending to be stupid. Dan was responding specifically to Postman's little dig at The Stranger:

“Please excuse the (totally unnecessary) profane headline”

Who is Postman to decide whether or not cursing is "necessary"? And what if it is unnecessary - so fucking what? I and thousands like me appreciate the fact that The Stranger says "fuck". If Postman wants to warn his readers about profanity, more power to him. As for labeling it "totally unnecessary"? Lick my ass.

...so what I was saying, FUCK you Postman, I don't care about your pansieness. My mom even said for me not to care. If it wasn't for her I'd have ASS else to do

The thing is, good writers/orators don't need to rely on profane expletives to get their message across. It's the easy, lazy way.

A smart, proficient person can still say or write something impactful and emphatic without resorting to words that by their very nature get an immediate recoil.

It's just lazy.

Perfect for playgrounds or Seattle.

No, Dan, I should be writing headlines like that when it makes some sense. But writing fuck -- ooh, you're right that feels so good -- doesn't always make sense does it? I don't think that e-mail qualified as "fucking" angry or whatever. I link to the Slog a ton of course and never worry about our different standards for language. This one just seemed, well, unnecessary. And as to Sean, it's not up to me to decide when profanity is necessary for the Slog of course, but it is for when I decide to link to it on my blog.

@ 15, give it a rest already, will you?

Anyone who calls establishment ass-kissing, rubber stamping, "Go Along Get Along" Bob Edwards out on his sudden born again political progressiveness conveniently taking place right before the major dailies are due with their port commission endorsements deserves props. Good job Josh!

And King County could care less about housing low income families in this county. If they did, they would be collaborating with Burien city hall and other local governments on real solutions.

Instead, the the county government bureaucrats are bullying Burien, threatening to withhold funding, and when that doesn't work, they file baseless lawsuits.

It's great political theater, it draws a lot of attention to the Housing Authority, but it does little to actually solve the problem of housing the homeless.

What does that have to do with the use of the word "fuck"? And if you're so smart, why has The Stranger been silent on Lora Lake?
