Comments on City Pages Film Editor Fired

I much prefer The Stranger's New York vibe. When I moved here from Manhattan I was warned it would be a backwater. The frequent slogging about the NYT and New Yorker Mag keep me from getting too homesick.

The Weakly is lame, I never read their film reviews anyway.

Yesterday The Stranger\'s Dan Savage wrote \"I hate ...cripples on buses.\" Dan\'s sloggites thought it was amusing. More thoughtful people would think geeeez, What an asshole!
Now that was some really cool shit you would never read in the Village Voice. And I\'d post a link to Dan\'s \"Say Yes To War\" article Oct. 2002 for you folks to read but the Stranger web master has blocked it. Hmmmmmmm why don\'t they want you to see it?

If the Stranger hates the Weekly so much, why take so much time commenting on every minute aspect of it?

A more accurate answer to the question you ask ("What does the firing of a film editor at a paper halfway across the country have to do with Seattle?") is: nothing.

Do you folks realize that your obsession with the Weekly is weird? Do you really think someone being fired at Village Voice Media in NY is important or interesting to your readers? The only explanation that I can think of for your hatred of the Weekly is that you want to think of yourself as bad-ass and anti-establishment and so you try to portray the Weekly as "The Man." And the reason you feel the need to do this, I'm guessing, is because The Stranger is old now and very much an establishment alternative weekly at this point, and not the least bit radical. Your readers are 30- and 40-somethings, not the hip young kids.

The Stranger has not "jumped the shark". The Stranger still has a hip young demographic. Get your facts straight.

The rest: I'm giving the Weekly the benefit of the doubt and assuming that people read their reviews. I strongly believe that the ever-shrinking pool of voices talking about contemporary film is bad for the industry and the consumer. And it certainly affects the range of opinions people have access to in Seattle. As for The Stranger "aging"--say what you want about other sections, but I'm 26 (and, uh, I was born on Capitol Hill), and if that's not the youngest film editor the paper has ever had, it's pretty close. Not that that's anything to brag about. In any case, The Weekly isn't the man, darlings; it's the indentured servant. VVM is the man. Also, stop being boring.

It's possible to be for the war and be against it. Most Israelis are for and against war at the same time. Judaism allows for a wide range of opinions.

Whoa. Annie -- you post something about some guy from VVM in NY being fired, and you tell people to "stop being boring"? That is pretty funny. And congratulations on being 26. You're probably the Stranger's youngest reader, not just it's film editor.

First of all this guy lives in Minneapolis, was employed by a corporate entity in New York, but that's all besides the point. Rob is one of the nation's most well respected film critics, and the most recent to be laid off in the wake of various media conglomerations. He is among good company with Dennis Lim and Michael Atkinson (who also used to be employed by New Times, and whose reviews appear butchered in the Weekly, but who has recently been seen writing for these very pages). Scott Tobias had a good point when in response to this news, he suggested this was yet another example of the possibility for film editors to add some class to their sections.
