I much prefer The Stranger's New York vibe. When I moved here from Manhattan I was warned it would be a backwater. The frequent slogging about the NYT and New Yorker Mag keep me from getting too homesick.

The Weakly is lame, I never read their film reviews anyway.

Yesterday The Stranger\'s Dan Savage wrote \"I hate ...cripples on buses.\" Dan\'s sloggites thought it was amusing. More thoughtful people would think geeeez, What an asshole!
Now that was some really cool shit you would never read in the Village Voice. And I\'d post a link to Dan\'s \"Say Yes To War\" article Oct. 2002 for you folks to read but the Stranger web master has blocked it. Hmmmmmmm why don\'t they want you to see it?

Pathetic and childish.

If the Stranger hates the Weekly so much, why take so much time commenting on every minute aspect of it?

I hope you all put "petty jealous journalist" on your resumes.

A more accurate answer to the question you ask ("What does the firing of a film editor at a paper halfway across the country have to do with Seattle?") is: nothing.

Do you folks realize that your obsession with the Weekly is weird? Do you really think someone being fired at Village Voice Media in NY is important or interesting to your readers? The only explanation that I can think of for your hatred of the Weekly is that you want to think of yourself as bad-ass and anti-establishment and so you try to portray the Weekly as "The Man." And the reason you feel the need to do this, I'm guessing, is because The Stranger is old now and very much an establishment alternative weekly at this point, and not the least bit radical. Your readers are 30- and 40-somethings, not the hip young kids.

The Stranger has not "jumped the shark". The Stranger still has a hip young demographic. Get your facts straight.

Talk of butchering - read some of Josh's hit pieces if the Stranger does not get what it wants from a political leader.

Now that is butchering journalism.

The Stranger's decision makers have small man penis envy and attack ALL the other rags to compensate, ie. the Weekly, PI, SGN, Times .... etc.

Surprised the women on the staff don't call foul on the game.

WHAT they might do if they could stay focused on their own game and with the millions of ad revenue they now pull in ... gosh, but butchering is more fun ... I guess ... good old stomping and kicking

Dan is not from Seattle. And it shows.

The word cripple has not been used in this town for 50 years ... maybe a mouthy teenage boy ... one time, just till mom and dad close in.

Let alone degrade METRO for the best access in the USA for all disabled folks.

For 95 per cent of us that access is a point of real civic pride, showing some advanced cultural ideals.

Dan's mama needs to give him a very stern lecture about the value of words ... with the horrid scowling face and finger shaking ... and NO doubt in why not.

Sigh, sigh.

Ignoring 1, who is a documented troll.

@2: Of course it's online; please stop spreading misinformation. Here, for your reading pleasure: Dan was for the Iraq war. I was strongly against the invasion (though I'm for a continuing occupation), so I have no idea what you're doing in my comments thread.

The rest: I'm giving the Weekly the benefit of the doubt and assuming that people read their reviews. I strongly believe that the ever-shrinking pool of voices talking about contemporary film is bad for the industry and the consumer. And it certainly affects the range of opinions people have access to in Seattle. As for The Stranger "aging"--say what you want about other sections, but I'm 26 (and, uh, I was born on Capitol Hill), and if that's not the youngest film editor the paper has ever had, it's pretty close. Not that that's anything to brag about. In any case, The Weekly isn't the man, darlings; it's the indentured servant. VVM is the man. Also, stop being boring.

La la la. "No cripples on the bus" was a joking reference to a post that ECB wrote a year or two ago, which some accused her of writing as comment bait. My list of "wanna see banned" included other comment bait slog subjects.

I am all for cripples on the bus.

\"I am all for cripples on the bus.\"

Gee, that is great Mr. Savage. Because since your president Bush and all of his war monger supporters INCLUDING YOU started that war in Iraq this country has tens of thousands of new \"cripples.\" And Dan, why don\'t you take your brave war monger ass over to Iraq as war correspondent for The Stranger and cover the blossoming of democracy? Tell America the truth that the MSM is missing! And take Annie along so she can give a woman\'s perspective on this occupation that she supports. It would be nice for the troops serving there to hear her well thought out arguments as to why the occupation should continue. There isn\'t two cents of real difference between you snarky assholes and the Bushies.

So does this mean they'll have to cancel the Ask An Uptight Seattleite column he ghostwrote?

Maybe ECB can write a column for them "BusGirl" is I'm thinking a good name, hope noone has it yet.

It's possible to be for the war and be against it. Most Israelis are for and against war at the same time. Judaism allows for a wide range of opinions.

But in America ignorant Christians have no dissonance in their thinking so they have only the war - no war binary. Dan is correct to be for and against the war. It's the only intelligent position for the media to take.

yes war - no war ????

Is that like only beating your woman on weekends?

Wow - the scathing wits in this thread must really be doing some serious damage to "The Man's" psyche. I, myself, can hardly stand the rapier's sting. Someone please call an ambulance.

Whoa. Annie -- you post something about some guy from VVM in NY being fired, and you tell people to "stop being boring"? That is pretty funny. And congratulations on being 26. You're probably the Stranger's youngest reader, not just it's film editor.

First of all this guy lives in Minneapolis, was employed by a corporate entity in New York, but that's all besides the point. Rob is one of the nation's most well respected film critics, and the most recent to be laid off in the wake of various media conglomerations. He is among good company with Dennis Lim and Michael Atkinson (who also used to be employed by New Times, and whose reviews appear butchered in the Weekly, but who has recently been seen writing for these very pages). Scott Tobias had a good point when in response to this news, he suggested this was yet another example of the possibility for film editors to add some class to their sections. Annie are you interested? Let me know.
