In other news: A story from Dan Savage\'s war of liberation in Iraq--Freedom is on the march!

Over the past nine months, his family has suffered one horror after another. In June, his father disappeared while visiting Omer’s sister in a mixed and violent district that has been ethnically cleansed by Shia militias over the course of the year. (Omer’s family is Sunni.) Omer begged the local Office of the Martyr Sadr for information, but the Sadrists denied any involvement. After ten days or so, Omer went with a friend to look for his father at the morgue and found a scene of absolute hell. Bodies were stacked two or three high in the hallways, with no refrigeration, the older corpses beginning to decompose and generate maggots. Holding hands, Omer and his friend examined body after body until they found one that had been shot in the torso and might have been his father; they couldn’t be sure. Morgue officials led them to a room where a few dozen Iraqis, many of them women, were staring at six computer monitors. The screens showed a picture of one corpse’s face for a few seconds, then flashed the next face. Now and then, someone in the room would begin to wail. This was the closest thing to “closure” and dignity in death that the victims’ families could expect. Suddenly, the face of Omer’s father appeared on all six screens.

Excerpt from \"Say Yes To War\" by Dan Savage October 2002

\"In the meantime, invading and rebuilding Iraq will not only free the Iraqi people, it will also make the Saudis aware of the consequences they face if they continue to oppress their own people while exporting terrorism and terrorists. The War on Iraq will make it clear to our friends and enemies in the Middle East (and elsewhere) that we mean business: Free your people, reform your societies, liberalize, and democratize... or we\'re going to come over there, remove you from power, free your people, and reform your societies for ourselves\"

For sure - the horror of fruit flies - nothing like the horror of war.

God, we ask,how did the Nazis take over Germany?

Read the post above.

@2 - I just had a MAJOR fruit fly infestation at my hour. It was the insect version of "The Birds". I had to make nifty traps for them to get rid of the infestation, but I still find a couple of them around, despite having scrubbed every surface in my kitchen with white vinegar, and having no food out at all.

I've never had a fruit fly problem here before. FFs are disgusting!

BTW, I thought posts like #1 were subject to deletion under the fancy new policy?

Y'all should get to Swansons (or wherever) and pick up some carnivorous plants! They eat your flies and provide quite the conversation piece.

(And yes, the fact that I am discussing something other than The War means that I have turned my brain off and am submitting to our conquerors.)

From what I understand, fruit flies are attracted to strong color contrasts, so it's probably not just the white, but the combination of white and black that's causing them to land on the paintings. Or perhaps they're attracted to some volatile (airborne) chemical in the paint.

I'd take a fruit fly over a house fly any day. Fruit flies like rotting fruit; house flies are less choosy, and will land on poo and sponge at it with their sponging mouthparts, and then they'll land on your arm and sponge on you, too.
