So I'm guessing your issue is that they threw in

"The Showbox featuring Devin the Dude, a Houston-based rapper."

Rather than info on some jazz concert at Tula's down the street.

Unfortunately, all parties will turn out to be black and the paper will turn out to be right. The neighbors know it, the readers know it, and deep down -- you know it.

----torrent of apologies for saying that out loud----

Well, it could have been the perverts too...but they didn't mention the Can-can (only the Vu) so yeah, they must assume this was a race/rap related shooting...

Yeah, I think it's outrageous that they essentially attribute it to either a strip club or a rap show.

If they're wrong, the initial implication &mdash that it had something to do with a rap show&mdash is what's going to stick in readers' heads.

haven't they all killed each other yet?

when you are walking around downtown it doesn't take a genuis to figure out who the assholes are shooting each other.

yes, many of them are black. do they shoot each other because they are black? no. is race a root cause of murder in seattle? of course not.

why is race even an issue here?

environments that glorify murder, objectification of women, and gang activity on the other hand.....

Funny, the PI doesn't mention that the whole block is a massive drug market... that could be bad for downtown business I guess. No, let's blame the rap show.

probably drugs, but if the shooters turn out to be attendees of the show, will you eat crow?

Posted by maxsolomon | August 11, 2007 11:52 AM

I hope you don't eat any crow if the shooters turn out to be attendees of the show. That's just one of many possibilities and it might turn out to be the right one. It might not. Journalism is about asking questions and getting answers --not taking guesses as to what the answers might be.

Googlefight!

"stripclub shooting": 78
"concert shooting": 563
"nightclub shooting": ~42,700
"random shooting": ~65,800
"drive-by shooting": ~907,000

Whether I end up eating crow isn't at issue. There are a million different things down on 1st that could've led to the shooting, but the PI just took an uneducated stab in the dark at what might've caused it.

Well, regardless of who is to blame one thing is for certain...in the next 14 to 24 months 3 major high-rise residential buildings will be opening with a 1 block radius of last night's shooting...I suspect that when these residents have moved in, the neighborhood will have changed dramatically...no more drive by shootings, not more open drug market, not more needle exchange and possibly no more venues that cater to "high risk" (read 21 - 28 year old)crowds...the kind of money that is moving into the Market neighborhood buys much more than an Escalade to shoot from...if necessary, it will even buy a new mayor and city council...

My bad..

I guess the angle you (the author) were taking with your comments was how it was of course linked to a club/venue....not a race thing.

Ah, the PI. Bastion of baseless allegations and false guilt-by-association... Classic example of wretched journalism.

The Pike Place Market is right across the street!!! Shut the Market. New headline MARKET MURDERS MAKE MAYHEM.

It is likely some drug dealing scum bags that are trying to follow any crowd to engage in their illegal activity. In most cities they are called criminals. In Seattle they are called club patrons.

Read Robert Jamieson's column from Friday. It says it all, including this from a family who doesn't plan to return to Seattle anytime soon:

"We were exposed to hordes of disgusting homeless people, aggressively panhandling and harassing my family," he wrote.

"At one point, a crack-whore hassled my wife for a full city block starting at Third and Pike while my 6-year-old daughter became visibly frightened."

Raffay says he didn't see one cop out and about. On his last day in town, he saw a tough-looking posse rolling blunts out in the open at Third and Pike at 11 in the morning.

"In their doo-rags and parkas, they gave me the stink-eye, and I decided to call the police," Raffay said. When the hooligans heard him complaining about the brazen doping, he said. "They threatened me."

Oh, Jamieson's a ninny. Loves to stir imaginary pots because he fancies that it makes him a "Journalist"

There's problems down First, that's for sure, but that drama queen probably never goes closer to it than the PI's offices.

If anything is going to clean up First Avenue, it will be the aforementioned new condos and the new Four Seasons Hotel. Not only do those sorts of people have influence, but the sheer number of new bodies will force the troublemakers out.

Finally, the idea of a dry boobie show working men into a murderous frenzy makes me want to giggle.

Oh, and as far as the hysteria ridden family with the obligatory frightened child (because it's so much more important when a child is frightened, after all) goes - that's pretty much a repeat of the hysteria-ridden woman who started a "boycott" of Seattle for conventions after a "crack-whore" pushed her down some stairs or something.

Maybe it was the same "crack-whore"! Maybe that's the trouble!

BLAME THE CRACK-WHORES!!!

Wow - and I thought the PI was your new BFF. Good stock and all.

I particularly like the father figure here who can't even wait to get out of earshot before exercising his moral outrage.

The shooter was said to leave the scene in an Escalade, per the PIs paper edition this morning. So one thing is definite - an SUV is involved. So ban SUVs. That's a position a lot of people would get behind.

I just like that the rapper is from HUSTON of all places.

Rap=guns and strip clubs, everyone knows that!

Actually, it is so much more important when a child is frightened. Isn't that obvious? I thought it was obvious. And I would bet you a dollar Jamieson has been to First and Pike.

I was the one whom called 911. I was driving the 15 northbound. I hit my EA- thank you Weekly for publicizing that info. I heard the RAPID FIRE. I saw the shots piercing the walls. It wasn't the showbox, everyone one there looked fucking dumbstruck-like me. The cops took more then five minutes to show up! What shootings at pike/ pine, huh? I think they were all too busy handling Nickles deadly five nightclubs.
Is it gangs? Not sure, but many of the kids you see "hanging" down there are dropped off by Metro. I saw at least two under sixteens running with pieces drawn. I don't think they were the shooters- just scared.
Why are these kids allowed too loiter? What makes it so appealing? They aren't homeless. It's not the skaters either.
Why is the dealing so flagrant? Wait, the Stranger is so drug friendly, don't wanna go there...might scare away your dealer- or someone's.
The big thing that irks me- you never see a cop outside their car. Maybe it's time too put up a permanent foot patrol. 24-7 at pike/pine.

How about placing cameras all over the pike/pine - 1/3rd zone? Hasn't that worked in London...? We'd probably know the license plate numbers on that escalade if we had those up...

I was a block away waiting for the main performer to go on. what i was most confused by was the time it took for me to hear even a siren. all the people around me including myself were all in shock not even thinking to call the cops because i would assume they'd have at least two cars parked in the perimeter. if the ave has so many cops why not FIRST AVE.

We were sitting at the red light when the shots rang Friday night and I turned to look over my left shoulder in the direction of the sounds(in the passenger seat of our convertible). I saw a guy duck down behind our car and assumed he was one of the many people finding a hiding place as the shooting was going on. We drove off within a minute as the light turned green figuring the guy kept running low to the sidewalk. We also were amazed at how long it was until the sirens started. As my husband went to put something in his trunk the next morning he saw blood splattered all over the trunk. Obviously one of the victims was the guy I saw dart behind our car but we had no idea he was hurt. I just got a glance and then we took off to protect ourselves. We called the police after we discovered the blood and they said it was not going to be helpful in the case. We are sorry we didn't realize the man was hurt or we could've taken him to the hospital ourselves. Also we feel very lucky the shooter did not have a better aim and only hit two people. I can't believe the Escalade's license plate number was not recorded by anyone. Our prayers go out to the victims and witnesses. Were the victims innocent or did they provoke the shooter? I am interested and hope someone gives us more information.
