The enemy: "We want to protect our company's properties and we have to ensure the safety of our employees. So we cannot open our stores at the moment," said Raghu Pillai [of Reliance Retail.] The people: "This is a victory for the working class, the toiling peasants and the small traders involved with retail of agricultural products," said [the leader of The Forward Bloc], Ashok Ghosh. The leader of the state's main opposition Trinamul Congress party...

So dumb. One reason people there are poor is because they don't have efficient shops or infrastructure. We could make jobs for all the poor people in the world (by making us all poor) if we just reverted to hunter-gatherers.

It's like saying "if we get rid sharecropping all these poor farmers won't have jobs" or "if we get ride of the garbage dump and replace it with a factory all the hobos won't have a trash to rummage through".

Garbage dumps, garbage shops and garbage ideas.

An Indian supermarket is much better than an American-owned Walmart. At least the profits stay in India. Those activists are going to be hoist on their own petard by chasing out local retail stores, leaving plenty of room for more rapacious foreign stores. But whatever, too bad for them.
