Architecture A Quick Word About…

onThe PACCAR Pavilion:
The real jewel of the Olympic Sculpture Park is its headquarters. The architecture of the landscape finds its sense (or completion) in this building and not so much in any of the sculptures. I make this point now because so little praise or attention has been paid to the one thing that actually deserves it. We can say with certainty that the PACCAR Pavilion is the only piece of architecture in the design desert of Belltown.

Charles- Why don't you ever name the architect when you talk about how great (or how bad) the architecture is? Fame in the Slog is all we live for.
"We can say with certainty..."
Hey, that's *our* editorial we. Give it back! Or else. And by else, I mean Audrey.

I'm surprised you capitalized PACCAR correctly. Rarely anyone outside of the company ever does.
And oh, what a fucked up company it is.
"has been pained"
What does that mean?
It is a gorgeous building and it is the "jewel" because the "sculpture" park is suffering from a serious lack of sculpture! It's really disheartening in a city like Seattle where so much personal wealth abounds that there weren't more world class installations to stock the park with..... Gee, Howard Schultz screws the city over by selling off the Sonics, but does he give back? No. That jerk that used to own QFC has a one night extravaganze in Gasworks Park, but does he give back? No. Oh sure in certain ways they do to things like the symphony, ballet, opera, etc..., but not to something more long lasting that every single person in Seattle could go an enjoy for FREE! This isn't to say that there hasn't been an outpouring of philanthropy towards the sculpture park, but it certainly falls short of what it should be for a city of Seattle's wealth. A lof of the younger Microsoft money doesn't even know what the word philanthropy means for crying out loud other than giving a hummer for free!
charles,
next time you head out to the sculpture park, please do a couple of things for me:
1. as you enter the headquarters, stop and look. i challenge you to look at what is presented and tell me it is anything but a visual and diagramatic mess.
2. continue through the building till you get to the glass wall on the north side of the building, turn around and look. admire the huge and flashy stair that leads to a small meeting room and dead end hallway. why?
if you are going to make comments and judgements on architecture, please do so on the basis of where it begins, with function and purpose.
