Everybody's been talking about the artist departures at Howard House, a Pioneer Square gallery that's at the center of the art scene in the city. I caught up with Billy Howard, founder and owner of the gallery, on Wednesday. This will be in next week's paper; here's a preview: Emerging artists are hot. Veteran artists are eminent. The ones in the middle, well, they dangle and suffer. The same goes for galleries. Howard House, which opened 10 years ago in July, was once the pretty young thing of Seattle galleries. Billy Howard started it in his house, hence the name,...

Okay, Regina Hackett and now you are reporting that several artists are leaving their present galleries, but neither one of you have told us WHERE those artists have gone. Who are the lucky galleries NOW representing these artists? Inquiring minds want to know! Sarah Moon

Sarah. Great question, and as yet there is no answer to it. These artists didn't leave because they knew they'd land elsewhere. They just left. The elswhere is yet to be determined.

wow, I took it for granted that one would leave a gallery for a better deal, not simply leave. well, I look forward to reading where these artists eventually DO wind up. thanks for keeping us posted, Regina and Jen! sarah moon

I'll apologize for how poorly written this is, but I'm in a bit of a rush today ....

While reading what Billy said, I realized he stumbled upon the exact reason why the artists left; they're jealous.

They're jealous that he, and most other dealers, get to have a life, family, etc. outside of art. Dealers get vacations and we get our studios on hot summer nights after we put in a hard day at our 9 to 5. They email us of sales while they're at the art fairs in far off places, and to let us know they're "going to stay an extra week because its so lovely" there, while we're in our studios on cold fall night after a hard day at the 9 to 5. They get to begin, and enjoy, families, while we get our studios on a cold winter night.

After years of this, we get fed up. We see ourselves partially financing their good times, and we're left with none. We see ourselves sacrificing everything else in life that we may want, while they go and do it.

And in the end, all we ask for is a career that has been pushed a bit farther than it was when we started working together, and if its not, we leave.

anon August 30, 2007 7:26 AM: while your musings are sideways interesting, unless we are witnessing the planned precursor to an artist-run gallery through which the artists in question are thinking they'll get more of a cut and more of a life (and good luck on the 'life' part when you add the running of a gallery to the making of the art), i seriously doubt that what you suggest is in any way the motivating factor behind the hh defections.
