A Blood Red Moon

posted by on August 27 at 21:23 PM

If you’re up in the pre-dawn hours tomorrow morning, look for the lunar eclipse about 45 degrees above the southern horizon. The Earth’s shadow (“the umbra”) will begin creeping across our view of the moon at 1:51 am. Between 2:52 and 4:22, our moon will be totally in shadow and glowing dull orange to blood red (“the totality”), and then the shadow will slink off again right at sunrise.

I got off work at 1am. After I picked my children (8 & 10 yrs) up from the sitters; we stayed up to watch the eclipse. I had a blue moon. They had hot cocoa and choco chip cookies.
Wow the questions! We discussed planets, the meaning of life, and all the things the moon resembled (personal fav: bloody eye ball sans the socket.)
Just sent them to bed. Best night of the summer!

L.A.P.D. choppers criss-crossing in front of the orange-y orb with their beams of searching white light make the view from this latitude downright spooky.

Is that a one day thing only? I can't remember my eclipse lectures from school. I did see the eclipse partially, but I missed the beginning. Darn!

Damn! I wish I had read this before I went to sleep... I kept waking up last night and it would've been nice to have seen that.

It was a rainy night in Denver so no eclipsed moon for us. But I've seen it before and total lunar eclipses are much easier to see than any solar eclipse so it won't be too long before the next one (4 years I think).

it was cool, watched it from the ship canal park in fremont with a boom box and a sixer of pbr tallboys. nice relaxing evening, I thought it looked like the eye from LOTR. The next one is on 2-21-08

It was fun for a bunch of 16 yo's I ended up hosting - especially all the different colors!

But the sprinklers at Gasworks were ... interesting.

@4 - another full lunar eclipse in only ten years, but it will probably be overcast.
