Question to the Stranger: WHY are you paying ANY attention to what Bill Kristol says? He is nothing but a full time talking head on Fox News and a hard-core disproven neocon who will support Bush no matter what. That and he thinks we need to bomb...Pakistan as well as Iran. This is the same old dribble from the right, different date.
Cato, the reason to pay attention is that until Bush leaves office, and depending on who gets elected, Bill Kristol can be wrong about everything time and again, but still have influence with the decision makers. Also, he makes for good dark comedy.

I'm so grateful for Arianna Huffington. She and Jon Stewart are keeping me sane.
I know that William Kristol is a nut, and the fact that he consistently spreads lies (such as the disproven Saddam- bin Laden connection), but it is distressing to see the Washington Post keep printing this kind of garbage. I do think that most people know he's a neocon hack, though it shows how much of a neocon apologist paper the Post has become.
In another line of work, someone who misreports would have been canned long ago. It's funny how Jayson Blair was fired after his lies were uncovered, but the Bill Kristols of the U.S. MSM can lie all they want and they are still gainfully employed.

Read the interview and while his more aggressive detractors were entertaining, there was too much filthy filthy shit coming out kristol's smarmy gullet to leave me smiling, as I do not doubt he was.
You guys should really, really be happy that Bill Kristol is writing this shit. I know I am. With every article he writes, he reveals just how fucking clueless he is. In fact, if this war has had one good consequence, it's that the young Bill Kristols have been exposed for the fools they are, and hopefully, the next time they beat the war drums, people will tell them to fuck off. One can hope, at least.
Gitai has a point. Kristol used to be a serious commentator; he is one of the original neocons who built the intellectual house in which Bush and Cheney live. But something terrible happened to him, and them, along the way. He used to be a respectable conservative, inasmuch as such a thing can exist; now, like his entire class, he's a raving, cowering, spitting loon. When you see crazy Bill Kristol, you're seeing the last throes of the insu -- er, intellectual conservatism. It's almost dead. He's dead. Reaganism is dead. Finally.

Forget blowback and the radicalization of the Islamic world by the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars - all down the Memory Hole; people will be plaintively asking "why do they hate us?" all over again the next time we're attacked. There's simply no policy apparatus in place that forces Americans to learn from or even remember/care about our mistakes.

Going back to the title Kristol's op ed "Why Bush will be a Winner," there's no need for future tense:
Bush is a winner.
He has won.
His minions and cronies are winners, too.
They've enriched themselves to levels that would have been unimaginable even a few years ago. They've stacked the courts with far-right Bushbots who'll make peoples' lives hell for decades, totally conquered the establishment media and the Democrats to the point where both mindlessly repeat right-wing talking points right off Karl Rove's Powerbook.
They've accomplished all of their goals and will now go on to seven figure book deals, speaking gigs, cushy jobs in far-right think tanks and tenured positions in the liberal academia that they claim to despise.
None of them will ever be held responsible for anything.
Let's not kid ourselves otherwise.
So mean, Andy. Let the hopefuls have their moment. Ah, but seriously, you totally have a point. The Supreme Court of Jesusland is the biggest triumph of all, as far as insuring that at least one aspect of US government is run by neanderthal fuckwits for eons untold. But gawddammit, I gotta be hopeful about something. That's this: Everything in history has had to get bad before it can get better. In many ways we live much better lives now than our ancestors. of course, we're obliterating the ecosytem that makes it possible for us to live at a rate that would make the God of Revelations blush, and butchering each other for kicks, and so on and so forth and scooby dooby doo, but it's the fallout from these catastrophes that forces people to change their ways. I, for one, think it's remotely possible we will have our shit together by the time this extinction-level event called Unfettered Capitalism has played itself out.

No, they didn't "plot" to get the SCOTUS as conservative as it is. They were handed the privilege of doing that by constitutional law and time itself (people stepping down at the worst time possible for progressives). But putting conservatives in was their choice and their victory (and of course, our loss). So I'll put it on the list of their accomplishments.
Just getting Bush elected in '04 was an astounding victory of propaganda over the supposed common sense of the American people. Those guys are winners, all the way. And what they want to win is my worst nightmare.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but propaganda did not deliver the Bush election victory in 2004.
People vote for the candidate who's most like them, and that's how Bush and the Republicans sleazed their way into office. Living in the Seattle bubble, it's easy to forget that's what most Americans are like.
I dunno, Andrew. Man, you are just mean. :-P I like to give the masses the benefit of a doubt. There is no arguing that outright lies and propaganda led to the insanely large number of people believing Saddam had anything to do with 9-11. Maybe Oklahoma would have voted for Bush even if he was riding a Beast with 7 heads, but I like to think Tennessee would have voted for the other guy if they had been given a reasonable amount of truth to make their judgments with. Maybe I'm wrong. Whatever. Doesn't change the fact you're just on a mission to be a total buzzkill today. Heh.

I don't want to sound mean. I just think it's important for us to have realistic expectations. It's ugly, but we have to face the truth.
And c'mon, Bush II lies to us daily, is responsible for the deaths 500,000 people, is incompetent, regularly commits felonies in office and people can't be bothered to impeach him?
It won't happen, and it says a lot more about Americans and our government (see failure thereof) than anything else.
I still have hope. After the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, it took eight months to get a protest of 25,000 people together. Prior to that, protest has been limited to pacifist groups that opposed all wars, and had rarely breached numbers above a few hundred. It took four years for a majority of the nation to disapprove of the war's handling. In 1968, four years into the war, Richard Nixon was elected on the premise that he would end the war, and really, anti-war protestors were silenced and ignored until a majority of the country agreed with them.
Contrast that to the Iraq War. In some ways, similar, in that the majority of Americans were pro-war, but massive protests, not only in the US, but worldwide, were set up well in advance, and have continued throughout the war. There were questions about the government's rationale for war from the beginning, and anti-war voices were on TV from the beginning. Michael Moore won a fucking Oscar, even if he was booed off the stage. It was less than three years after the invasion for an anti-war Congress to get voted in, and a majority wants us the fuck out.
Maybe next time, we can stop the war before it happens. The fact that no one, aside from discredited hacks, is pushing for war with Iran, gives me hope.
