Who would Bush commute first, Grandy or the police chief?

I think Eric should be tried and convicted, then Dan can commute his sentence while cackling maniacally at his perversion of justice!

Kidding.

Can't this Atlas thing be over, please?

Olbermann called for Bush and Cheney to resign last night. No word on whether they're going to do it or not. Odds, anyone?

Wait, Bush & Cheney closed an all-ages club too?

Will their reign of terror never cease?

That was a rousing piece by Olbermann. They have the transcript up at Salon.

Or I guess it's on youtube? I'm pretty 20th Century when it comes to technology.

Yeah, I think I fell a little in love with Keith Obermann last night.

It's on both Salon and Youtube, but it's really better to see than read.

If these kids have the time to organize all ages shows and bitch endlessly at The Stranger, then dammit, they have the time to get high and watch reruns of Get Smart, like 14 year olds since time immemorial.

The Atlas kids need to get over it, get their permits (like everyone else would have to do) and put on their god damned show and shut up.

Jesus guys, I feel bad for you but it's not the end of the world, it's just a setback.

I would love to go to your stupid show as long as I have some assurance that some precautions have been taken to prevent me from dying in a fiery death.

Eric, stay put.

Now, Chief Gil... you need to go.

Jonah, you sound defensive and condescending. I'm neutral on this issue--seems like both sides could have done things better--but you sound like a schoolyard bully in your post. And that's both sad and predictable. These kids are upset, why keep instigating unnecessarily?

Not all of the whiners are 14.

They just act 14.

Bet you anything the kids have gotten word of this poll and are voting Grandy like mad.

Oh, and posting it as bulletins on MySpace so the rest of their friends can vote too. Yeah, that'll get 'im!

I need to correct one overly-repeated meme, since it sounds like the people promulgating it never stepped foot in the venue part of Atlas.

Atlas is not a firetrap. It's a huge space. High ceilings. Concrete floors. Not much in the way of flammable (ironic for a clothing store, sure, but true). And, for god's sake, it's located on the loading dock.

Nobody was in any danger of being barbecued.

Just one other thing: Was any thought given in the production of this piece as to how the article would affect the entire underground music community?

Posted by Joshua H | July 4, 2007 10:54 AM

Joshua H, what on earth does the effect on the "entire underground music community" have to do with anything? Did the stranger enter into some agreement with the "community" to keep their not-so-secret secrets from publication? Was the story not news?

Has anybody even proven that the authorities read the article then shut down Atlas? Or could it just be a strange matter of timing, like a streetlight going out when you walk underneath it?

Even if that's the case, it's not like Grandy wasn't up to fire code, nor did Atlas make any attempt to keep their shows secret, what with the advertising and all. At the end of the day, Atlas is accountable, not Grandy.

Until the blood pours from our very eyeballs, this issue will not rest.

I voted for you, Eric.

@16: it's not like Grandy wasn't up to fire code

Okay, that made me giggle. Are you, in fact, up to code, Mr. Grandy?

Posted by Darcy | July 4, 2007 11:57 AM

I can never remember whether I'm inflammable or flammable, so no, probably not.

I thought Eric was flaming when I met him. But I was mistaken.

Damn Eric, only 27% want you to resign? You have a lot of catching up to do for Bush's percentage for those who want him impeached.

@14:

Sooo, the Fire Department shut you down - just because they hate you?

Structural issues are only one of many considerations; just because the ceilings are high and the floor is made of concrete, there are still dozens of other things in the building that have the potential for creating a fire hazard, any of which could turn a big empty warehouse with a loading door into a giant EZ-Bake Oven.

For example: Is the electrical system up-to-code? Does the venue have functional sprinkler/fire suppression systems in place? Is there adequate egress for the number of occupants? Do you have working emergency lights & Exit signs?

All of those are just as important as having a big open room and a big (maybe open) door.

Hey, I'm supporter of the underground music scene, so I am obviously an expert of structural integrity and fire hazards

@25,26

I'm not affiliated with Atlas. I am also not arguing that the SFD didn't have a right to shut the venue down. I'm not an expert on fire safety or electrical codes. I'm only saying that the people here that are screaming "flaming deathtrap!" don't have an accurate conception of the nature of the venue.

I walked by a similar stencil a few days ago and was humiliated by the hatred and vitriol being thrown around over this issue. Taking snarky potshots at a select group who, while they may or may not have done this stencil were certainly affected by the closure, is at the same level. Neither you nor the vandal are helping out in any way with your words. It's not public discourse, it's mockery.

Yeah Garth, that's pretty much the idea.

Yes, Garth, posting a (factual) blog entry is the same as (inaccurately) spray painting the sidewalk. you are a genius.

I think the stranger should just admit it was bad journalism. Then the atlas "Kids" should go back to doing what they do? (Kids? The dude is bald!) Really I don't think he should resign over this. Maybe over his lack of talent, but not this. What does Dan care though, plenty of all ages action out there on Vashon.

If a bunch of 14 year-olds are this upset it deserved to get shut down. Damn, go back home a spend some time with your family. Way to early to be into any "scene." Just a few years away from becoming beggars on Broadway.
