My God-forsaken (as evidenced by the glut of churches; they're obviously desparate for His guidance there) hometown? Oh, most unfortunate man, have you been brought low? Whatever compelled you to that dreary, dying burg? Please tell us it's just a day-trip to Saugatuck gone horribly awry.

Gray and cloudy in Saugatuck, flies on the beach. Went to Holland to grab a few things--including a book.

Dan Savage is Pinkston Regaeton the internet poet or Poochie Kafelnikov or something.

Oh, Brandon. Michigan has scared this gay and his partner away. We'll be moving east within a year!

Is it me or are half the nonnatives out here from Michigan?

Me: Grew up in Detroit, spent many many years in Kalamazoo (first four at K College), did time in Holland.

Dan, you missed the Tulip Festival! I did an internship with the Holland Sentinel during the '85 Tulip Festival, and is that place f-ed up or what? Even the folks in the conservative newsroom reeled at the messed upped ness of it all.

Books. Hmph. I presume you must be in lower Michigan.

I grew up in Michigan (Detroit) and lived there most my life...I had forgot Holland exists.

Joe G, your comparison of Holland, where you "did time," to prison is entirely apt. I did time there as well--23 years. We didn't call it "Helland" for nothing.

Hope they didn't chase you out of town, Dan. There's a reason the quiet-and-ashamed vastly outnumber the out-and-proud in places like that. Get thee back to Saugatuck; you're safer there.

I hate to get political and all, but did anyone above me actually look at the photo? Can you imagine that the highly conservative people of Holland, Michigan have a display of books about our conservative President, under a sign which calls the books about said President "True Crimes"? WTF? Holland is growing wise? Hope the rest of your stop in Saugatuck is better, but I hear rain showers are likely today. Sorry, Dan.

That did not turn out right. let me fix this... Can you imagine that the highly conservative people of Holland, Michigan have a display of books about our conservative President under a sign which describes the group of books which call the actions of the President and his subordinates as "True Crimes"? OK... I really need to get away to the West Coast (of Michigan, that is). Have fun, Dan.

Come visit Muskegon, where we have... okay, not a whole hell of a lot of anything, but a whole bunch of pervs who'd be glad to meet you! (Most are straight or bi, but we're all pervy. We renamed Camp DragonScythe Camp TMI at our last camping event...) Oh, yeah, we have a paper mill! And a kick-ass beach! And... erm... a bunch of pervs!

And yes, Holland is Conservative. Very, very, very. Holland is a bad place to be not White, Dutch and Protestant.

Not to burst your bubble, but that is the end of the Current Events section, that has spilled over onto the same bay where the True Crime is. I'm a wet blanket, but I shelve books at B&N 35 hours a week, and eventually it destroys you.

Still fantastic. And apt.

Julie @ 15, thank you for clearing that up! So, Holland really does still suck...DAMMIT!
