Interesting, the most backwards and anti-immigrant candidate even by GOP standards shows up. I wonder if his deport them all platform found an ear. I doubt it. It would be awful if it did.

Why would they bother? In 2000, Bush got 9% of the black vote, and in 2004, just slightly better, since blacks are apparently also susceptible to fear mongering, but that was pre-Katrina. If the next GOP candidate gets 5% of the black vote, I'll be terribly, terribly surprised.

It's embarrassing enough admitting to being a Republican amongst white people these days - who can blame 'em ...

In a close election, a vote is a vote. You don't have to win a majority, you just have to win more than you normally would.

hey @1, there's a bumper sticker that says "bush doesn't care about white people either" it's just that all the white people aren't as hip to that reality as the the people of color are. and they vote more.

@7 Indeed, but after Katrina, a Civil Rights division that filed zero suits based on racial discrimination, inaction in Darfur, etc., I think the GOP is more fucked than usual with black folks. I think the next GOP candidate won't hit 5%. I also don't think the next election will be close.

The GOP doesn't do well with blacks because blacks don't make a lot of money.

"During a speech at a 2000 rally for the display of the Confederate flag on public property, Ravenel called the NAACP, “The National Association of Retarded People,” and has made several other racially charged remarks throughout his career."

"Arthur Ravenel Jr. ... [is] a former Republican US Representative and current regional chairman of Giuliani’s campaign in the early voting primary state."

"Though President Bush has refused to speak to the NAACP throughout his presidency, Mehlman's July 14 [2005] speech to the NAACP renounced Republican efforts to capitalize politically on white Southerners' backlash against civil rights-era legislation."

"After promising the African American community that the Republican "Southern Strategy" had been put to rest Ken Mehlman and the Republican Party are up to their old divisive and backward tricks using racist innuendo to try to win elections.

"Unfortunately the GOP's Southern Strategy is alive and well," said Democratic National Committee Communications Director Karen Finney. "It's disgraceful that Ken Mehlman had the nerve to stand in front of the African American community with a fake apology for the Southern Strategy, yet the RNC has once again resorted to the same despicable, racist tactics in the Tennessee senate race."
