I feel your pain, but after a couple of times (like most things) you get used to it. It usually helps if you hit your head before you start reading. You should also hum one of your current favorite songs. You won't need to dedicate full attention anyway. If you can do this successfully, your brain will be totally blase about it.

So, is the new definition of nightclub going to be, "any establishment where someone gets shot at 2:00 a.m."?

In that case, all those 24-hour convenience store nightclubs better start shaping up - or else!

When you redefine "obese" to include more people, golly gee wilkers, we have more obese people! Nobody even had to gain a pound!

According to the CDC, the mean (average) weight of 19yr olds has increased 10-15lbs since the 1970s. For 20-74yr olds, it's a 20lb increase (and about 1 inch height increase) since the 70s. The "Conclusions" in the PDF reports this as a "dramatic increase". Personally, I don't think 10-20lbs qualifies as "dramatic". But then, I'm not trying to get funding from Weight Watchers, or to sell advertising to Jenny Craig.

I know that people get really pissed off about comments relating to weight gain but it is a reality that much of it is related to choices (like smoking) but as people will scold others about smoking how many of us will look at someone over weight and say "Gee, do you really need to have that chocolate cake?"

We are so damn worried about hurting people's feelings that we are ignoring the health risks of being obese.

@ Will, we are looking at weight gain not the positive results of better drug treatments. Frankly your comment sounds like if a gay guy is overweight in Seattle they must be HIV+. (seriously re-read what you wrote)

But I still like a nice AIDS jab now and again, so I'm still on Will's side.

Note, I'm not saying that is a bad decision. I just note that the message could be, "More people are being treated for diabetes!!!" or "We've become more aggressive in how we treat diabetes. We're identifying and treating people now who would have been classified as "healthy" before."
