If it wwasn't about something so sad, Robert Jamieson's column in the P-I would be hilarious.

Shukar, wearing golf shorts and a checkered hat, reached for a 12-ounce can of beer and popped the top. A spray landed on the brick wall of a nearby building -- a recovery center for drug abusers and alcoholics.

"I'm gonna crack one for my homey," Shukar said, taking a swig. "Respect."

Out of the darkness a young woman with tattoos and mourning eyes materialized. "I'm Angel," she said. "I'm family."

Thanks much for the NYT HIV article.
Central Ohio has lots of recent immigrants from Oaxaca (many, predictably, undocumented). I used to give HIV+ results to people who had to choose whether to stay here in the U.S. (where they could receive some limited treatment), or go home to family and risk not being able to make it back.
Sad situation. �Pinche Gringos! In addition to spreading war, we spread disease.

Mrs. Vitters is a hypocrite, and Mr. Vitters is a liar. Those character traits are much more representative of Southern Republicans than hooker-banging is.

This bodes ill for the recovery of New Orleans, as it reconfirms that there are zero political figures in the State of Louisiana with even the tiniest nugget of intelligence or responsibility. Get your checkbooks out; there's going to be another flood, and trillions of dollars of stupidly rebuilt homes are going to have to be paid for. Again.

Vitters will come out of this fine. Asshole.

@2 spreading war maybe, but spreading disease? how are we, in this case, spreading disease? you also imply there was a choice between treatment here or no treatment home... but there is treatment available (free, but sometimes difficult to obtain because of travel and social mores). finally, the treatment we do provide here -- which you mention -- is part of an effort to try to stop the spread of the disease.

Moreso than usual, this would be a really ace time to e-mail one's senators. You can bet there'll be a lot of e-mail browsing--and actual reading--happening at the filibuster while they're waiting for it to be over.

Ok, I had to read this story about 5 times before I realized it wasn't a metaphor, but apparently Jon Lovitz beat the snot out of Andy Dick:

"Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada, who witnessed the assault, said, "Jon picked Andy up by the head and smashed him into the bar four or five times, and blood started pouring out of his nose." Lovitz told Page Six, "All the comedians are glad I did it because this guy is a [bleep]hole."

Lovitz and Dick have been at loggerheads since a 1997 Christmas party at Hartman's house, five months before his troubled wife Brynn flipped out, fatally shooting Hartman, then killing herself. "Andy was doing cocaine, and he gave Brynn some after she had been sober for 10 years. Phil was furious about it - and then five months later he's dead," said Lovitz, adding that when he filled in on Hartman's "Newsradio" sitcom, "I told Andy, 'I wouldn't be here now if you hadn't given Brynn that cocaine.' "

Holy shit.

OMG, Americans are capable of logical thinking. If it's not a problem, it's not illegal. When are George and the brown shirts going to put an end to that free thinking?

Well, it's a conclusion based on the fact that something completely natural and totally harmless isn't illegal in Washington State, unless you're doing it to actually harm someone else.

Unfortunately this is America where we only talk about freedom so

1) when someone finds out that individuals are exercising their liberties, they'll freak out and want to stop them, and

2) this could never be extended to its logical end in order to de-criminalize other things that are harming no one.
