Interestingly, what appeared on my Google Reader for this post at 4:46 PM was only this:

Seattle Times reports that cops have confessed to the crime.

You guys really have it in for the SPD! :-)

The Washington State Bench-Bar-Press Guidelines, ethical standards which the P-I is violating, state:

"The release of certain types of information by law enforcement personnel, the bench, and the bar and the publication thereof by news media generally tends to create dangers of prejudice without serving a significant law enforcement or public interest function. Therefore, all concerned should be aware of the dangers of prejudice in making pretrial public disclosures of the following:

a) Opinions about a defendant's character, his guilt or innocence.

b) Admissions, confessions, or the contents of a statement or alibis attributable to a defendant."

In other words, just because the cops say a suspect confessed, that doesn't mean he did. And even if he did, we don't know the conditions under which he did so. So most of the press long ago agreed not to publish alleged confessions.

The P-I decided in this case that fairness to the suspect was not as important as selling newspapers.

....and what they are BOTH missing - What EVERYBODY seems to be missing, is the fact that Mike Webb was murdered by his lover, who rolled over in bed, and axed him to death.

When the "pencil pushing" City Council cuts funding to mental health organizations in order to save a buck, this is precisely the kind of thing you can expect to see more of in the news.

I sincerely hope that we all take this opportunity to ask those who remain on our City Council, as well as those who are running for a seat this year, just what they intend to do about it.

Mental health agencies need funding in order to reach out and help those who cannot afford it, or who otherwise have no other options. Throwing them out like yesterdays trash can only bring the same results to our community in the future.

Wake up and open your eyes to the HUGE red flags, people! Find the money, and fund these agencies before someone else loses their life in such a horrible way as Mike Webb did at the hands of Scott White.
