John McCain's presidential bid is nearly toast: John McCain's campaign manager and chief strategist are gone from their leadership roles, a major staff shake-up for the struggling Republican presidential candidate who is all but broke and trails in opinion polls. In statements, Terry Nelson, a veteran of President Bush's successful 2004 re-election effort, said he resigned as campaign manager effective immediately and John Weaver said he stepped down from his post of chief strategist on Tuesday. But other officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid discussing private conversations, said Nelson was fired. Two officials said Rick...

This is good for Democrats. The "base" -- the 6% of the Republicans who drive the debate -- have cast out McCain because of his reasonable position on immigration. Being reasonable isn't going to win you the R nomination -- but being UNreasonable is going to lose in November.

Seriously: the kook right, in paroxysms of denial over Iraq (Podhoretz thinks Iraq is an "amazing success"), have taken to extremist racist immigrant-bashing. The debate over there isn't whether English should be the official language anymore; it's whether it ought to be a capital crime to speak Spanish. A candidate who suggested such a thing today would immediately take the lead in the polls.

Exactly.
He went from an eccentric, somewhat appealing guy who appeared to be his own man, to obviously pandering to the scum that have run this country into the ground. Fool. He couldn't win them over, and lost all of his other potential and real support.

I guess we should be encouraged by this turn of events. Maybe rightwing religious fucktards won't be running every aspect of our country in a couple of years.

Which is all good. McCain self destructed as the crackpot he's always been. His political instincts are way off which means he's not presidential material anyways. As for the others-

Giuliani: The base doesn't trust him and the "war on terror" message is dead so he's not electable.

Romney: Has bucks but being Mormon screws him more with the R base than anyone else. He changes his position more than I change my underwear.

Thompson: Was known as the laziest Senator while in DC and I don't expect that will change. He should stick with acting.

The rest of them: Who are they?

To be honest, my big worry is that we'll be stuck with Hillary. She's hated by many and in my honest opinion hasn't done right by many of us on the left anyways. I wish the Clintons would go away and we could put the American Dynastic period to rest.

This is actually sad. McCain has alaways been the only reasonable Republican out there. I don't agree with everything but he's the closest to being a moderate we have. And we seriously need an alternative to conservative freaks and dead-end democrats.

Lets be realistic. Do the Dems even have a chance? Again? Ever? Hillary? Obama? Edwards? Give me a break. This country is way too racist and sexist to let a woman or black get anywhere near the presidency at this time, much less these two. Edwards is a long shot and who wants to see him deal with b*tches like Ann Coulter attack his dying wife and dead sons memory?

Face it, even us Democrats are going to have to choose the best of the worst. I wish it had been McCain. Veteran? Kind of a good thing to have now after the carnage. Campaign reform? When we tally how much is spent on this next election we'll wish it had been. Reasonable on immigration? Welcome to the near future regardless.

Please, someone give me the down and dirty rundown of what is(was) so bad about him. If people want to bitch about how he changed his position on things, I'd rather have that than an outright puppet.
