It might be hard for him to have a happy birthday, as he's, you know, dead.

If you want a preview of the 2008 election, read HST's "Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72". It covers both parties, but one of the central themes is detailing the split in the Democratic party over Vietnam.

See the 2008 version, starring Hillary Clinton as Hubert Humphrey.

"Too weird to live. Too rare to die."

I wish that was true of HST. RIP my man.

Yes, "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail of 72" is one of my favorite books and a must for any political junkie.

Happy birthday, Hunter!

Good catch, SR. Scrambled on good Wild Turkey and bad drugs, pimping for McGovern, HST was still lucid enough to know that nobody ever went broke by underestimating the intelligence of the Democrat Party.

And while Thompson wrote that HHH was a gutless treacherous old ward-heeler who should have been thrown into the Japanese Current, Eagleton was saying similar stuff about McGovern.

Meanwhile, cowgirl Hillary Rodham was decompressing from her girlish flirtation with Barry Goldwater.

Uh, you folks know how McGovern and '72 turned out, right?

If Bob Novak can be believed, Eagleton was responsible for having McGovern labeled the "Triple-A" candidate - pro-Amnesty (for draft evaders), Abortion, and Acid. A few months later, he was McGovern's VP nominee!

I think "Electroshock" Eagleton had more to do with the landslide loss than anything else, with McGovern moving from "behind Eagleton 1000%" to replacing him (with Ah-nold's father in-law) in the space of a week.

...and from "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", an all-time favorite line written on a napkin by HST's 300-pound Samoan lawyer and passed on to their North Las Vegas late-night Denny's waitress: "BACKDOOR BEAUTY?" - I know context is all - so read the book - y'all need a laugh anyway.
