Slog - Comments on Props to the Washington State Legislature

When your job includes something as boring as covering the Washington State Legislature, you cling to excitement wherever you can get it. For me, this morning is an exciting morning. In a NYT story about the impending collapse of abstinence only education (hurrah!), my beloved Washington state leg gets the nod in the lead: For the first time, however, Virginity Rules and 700 kindred abstinence education programs are fighting serious threats to their future. Eleven state health departments rejected abstinence education this year, while legislatures in Colorado, Iowa and Washington passed laws that could kill, or at least wound, its...

“After 10 years and $1.5 billion in public funds these failed abstinence-only-until-marriage programs will go down as an ideological boondoggle of historic proportions,” said James Wagoner, President of Advocates for Youth.

“The tragedy is not simply the waste of taxpayer dollars, it is the damage done to the young people who have been on the receiving end of distorted, inaccurate information about condoms and birth control. We have been promoting ignorance in the era of AIDS, and that’s not just bad public health policy, its bad ethics”.

Wow, so this means the Bushbots are going to accept that Ignorance Only education is doomed, right?

"High profile abstinence-only advocate, Robert Rector, led the preemptive damage-control planning. He outlined several strategies the abstinence-only movement could use to rationalize the findings in the report saying, “The other spin I think is very important is not [program] effectiveness, but rather the values that are being taught,” Rector said. Whether or not these programs work is a “bogus issue,” Rector continued."

Let's rinse and repeat:

"Whether or not these programs work is a “bogus issue...”

Sounds like a perfect Republican campaign slogan to me.

Rep. Shay Schual-Berke (D-33) had been priming this legislation for five years before it finally passed to the Gov this year. Rodney Tom was in the right place at the right time, but came late to the game when compared to those who had been working on this for a lot longer. It seems to me that the decision to let the senate version prevail was political to give Tom some D bona fides for his new resume.

Oh, Whatever, I am not a Burner supporter at all. I'd much rather see Ross Hunter running for the seat, but since that's not happening, I'm left without a candidate I want to support. The Oly Ds want to give Tom his bona fides in order to keep him in the fold and shove it in the faces of the Oly Rs. Getting Rodney to switch teams and win that seat was a real coup for them.
