Find the best spot and build the thing. Now. Then build more elsewhere. I don't skate, but these skate parks are essential and, frankly, beautiful. If you haven't, go to one and watch the participants. It's interesting and sometimes meditative.

Good God. I can't fucking believe I just received an e-mail defending the Du Pen Fountain because it's a popular wading pool for small children.

It's ugly.

But at least the new site will be large enough. However, I won't believe it's happening until I see actual kids skating.

Not just small children splash around in that fountain. Myself and some staff from Seattle Childrens Home, a mental health facility for troubled children, had a most enjoyable, unusual, and surreal afternoon frolicking in those waters which we were eventually told was not a waiding pool but a plain old fancy fountain by security, probably because the sight of a gaggle of mad adolescents having a inapropriately grand time was not kosher to the atmosphere of apparent normalsy the center wishes to put forth.
I remember a time when all abnormal children, and adults, took it apon themselves in this city to act out when ever and where ever they could, wether skaters or the committed, so condoned if in the spirit of joy and personal rebelion. I remember when skaters were cool, now they've got skater moms. Atleast the mentaly ill are keaping it real.

There is no place on Thomas Street for a skatepark. The city council, or David Della, or whoever thinks this is a viable option, must be smoking crack. There's no way this option will see the light of day either. Prepare yourselves for further delay.

@2: I suppose skate parks are "beautiful" in an urban chic sort of way, if you like graffiti-covered concrete.

I'm just curious when skateboarders became such an important priority that they get millions of dollars in infrastructure built for them. I'd never heard of a skate park until I moved out here.
