Re: Enjoy Your Day Off?

In response to my post below:

Eli,

If the fruits of technology were evenly distributed, and if Americans didn’t retain the hairshirt impulses of the Puritans, by now we’d all be taking half the year off while our robot servants performed all our chores.

that's my point too! tuesday mudede's ranting about the glory of illegal immigrants as "the hardest working americans", like there wasn't a labor movement to enshrine a 40 hr. workweek.

i just got to 3 weeks off a year for the first time in my life: i'm FORTY THREE. will i be able to take it all? will i be able to take my 3 weeks of comp time before it runs out december 1?

I'm already taking half the year off. You aren't? Maybe your robot servants are lazy.

It took seven years before we were able to negotiate even a single day of sick leave at my work, so forget about vacation time. The America Dream™!

Nooooooooo! We can't allow robots to become commonplace. Don't you people read sci-fi? Even Isaac Asimov, arguably the most pro-robot author in the genre, knew that robots would cost us our humanity, and that only through our own efforts would we remain both human and free.

Gitai's right. The robots will allow us to become soft, weak, and lazy. Then, they take over and enslave humanity.

Don't trust the robots!

@4 and 5: On the other hand, if the reimagined BSG is any indication, after the robots take over there will be incredibly hot pilots dressed in PVC jumpsuits to come and save us from them.

I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.

Yeah, especially if they look like Tricia Helfer. Rawr.

Um. The robots, I mean. Not the veterans.

@6 and 7 It's fellow travelers like you that will end up getting humanity enslaved.

Enslaved by hotness.

There ain't enough human women for you? You gotta be running around after mechanical tail? Shame, shame, shame.

@5 - BECOME soft, weak, and lazy? What the hell do you think most Americans are now? Soft, weak, lazy, and overstressed.

Some of our staff took this week off as vacation, and you should have heard them making preparations to leave. It's like fucking astronauts going through the takeoff checklist with Mission Control. "Well, I'll have my Blackberry, although on Tuesday, there might be some connectivity issues, and Thursday night at 8:00, I'll have to have it muted for an hour, and blah blah blah." God, people, get over yourselves. We CAN function without you for a couple of days. This isn't DEFCON 5 at NORAD HQ, for chrissake.
