I’m reading a book about the first U.S. Congress, and I learned that at all the evening soirees (which apparently happened most every night) everyone drank whipped syllabub.

Whipped syllabub?

I texted a friend to ask what whipped syllabub was.

My friend texted to say: “Ha! That’s an old British thing. It’s a mixture of whipped cream, whipped egg whites, sugar, and white wine. Sound gross to me.”

Not me. I want to dress up like James Madison and have a whipped syllabub party.

It's similar to the modern French dessert sabayon and the Italian zabaglione, which is typically made with marsala in a round-bottomed copper double boiler. It's pretty tasty, but very rich. Make sure to use good wine.

I have had a syllabub (weird college thing with the History majors, long story) They are not bad and there are a couple of good recipes on line. USE a good wine though or you will not get a good flavor.

Yeah, it sounds like zabaglione. Never had it, but zabaglione is pretty tasty. It's better with a fortified wine like port or vermouth, though.

Blancmange could beat syllabub in tennis any day of the week:

(I didn't realized this sketch was so long - about 25 minutes in all. The first time I watched it years back I was smoking hash and it seemed shorter and funnier, and I remember the blancmange seeming more real.)

Ben Franklin was awfully fond of milk punch. (related to egg nog) Typically a recipe would have tons of rum. (Thank you slave trade!) George Washington apparently had a recipe for egg nog that he liked to make for guests and it had whisky, rum and sherry. The Forefathers were party animals.

Um. Syllabub is nothing like sabayon (zabaglione). Sabayon is wonderful.

Syllabub, by contrast, *is* gross. I have a neighbor in Baltimore who loves to serve it and even has little syllabub cups and an antique silver syllabub whipper.

Syllabub is nasty.

HOWEVER - Athol Brose is indeed the nectar of the gods. Oatmeal, honey and Scotch - it's not just for breakfast anymore.
