Original Andrew, the war is stealing $12 billion a month from us now -- $282 mil is a drop in the bucket. But it is a little better than the average thousand bucks or so a US bank robbery gets you.

The only drawback I see to cases like this Vitter asshole is that it increases the chances that in future the ONLY criteria for political office will be extensively vetted sexual purity, which is not a very good way to get quality candidates. Who's going to be the first Senator to announce that he's been castrated and thus unable to boink (which isn't true, but we're talking politics not science)? Do you want that man to represent you?

The idea is that the Republicans need to get out of the 'legislating morality and condemning everyone who isn't like them' business and focus on actually doing their jobs (even though at this point they seem totally incompetent).

The Republicans don't dare campaign on actual issues. The majority of Americans are fairly moderate-to-liberal on most issues, and considerably to the left of the modern neocon-infested Republican party. All they have to campaign on is Terra Terra Terra, and various thinly-disguised forms of Fear Of The Other - whether it's "welfare reform" (q.v. "Welfare Queens in Cadillacs"), "pro-life" (aka Uppity Wimmins Will Take Our Jobs If They Control Their Own Fertility), "immigration reform" (aka we're being overrun by brown people who speak another language!!!), or "defense of traditional marriage" (otherwise known as Dammit, We're Running Out of People We Can Openly Despise and Discriminate Against!)

They can't run on the issues. Most of America disagrees with them, and they know it. If they tried to run on economic issues with any degree of honesty, they'd be creamed; their policies do not benefit the average American citizen; in fact, they are actively harmful. So they blather on about "high taxes" as if there was such a thing as a free lunch, and ignore the issues that their corporate masters want buried, like genuine health-care reform.

So they have to run on the bullshit hot-button issues. Democrats want to take all your guns away! Democrats will make the Bible illegal! Democrats will force your Baptist preacher to marry people to goats! Democrats will force you to abort all your children, and will teach your kids how to perform forms of sex that you only look at (and spank the monkey to) on the Intarwebs (sic) late at night when you're sure your wife is asleep!
